    Roughly a third of 10 and 11-year-olds in the East Riding are overweight or obese.

    The figures are from the National Child Measurement Programme.

    Efforts have been made in the past to reduce obesity levels, with some schools banning sweets and chocolate and the introduction of the sugar tax last year.

    Today health experts will meet with the East Riding Council to try and tackle the problem.

    The world renowned Turner Prize will open in Hull next week.

    The four finalists, Hurvin Anderson, Andrea Buttner, Lubaina Himid and Rosalind Nashashibi will exhibit their work at the Ferens Art Gallery until early January.

    It's the first time the Turner Prize has been held outside London.

    In December the winner will be announced, so we're taking a look at the artists and their work.

    Freshney Place shopping Centre's Apprentice Retailer of the year is on today.

    They'll offer one entrepreneur the chance to bring their idea to life, with a six-month tenancy at a unit within the shopping centre - free of rent, rates and service charges.

    Protesters brought a halt to today's full council meeting at Hull's Guildhall.

    Members of the GMB union targeted the meeting to call for better standards in the city's construction industry.

    Bus lanes in Grimsby are a waste of time and causing more congestion.

    That's from a conservative councillor in the town who wants to see a review of bus lanes in Grimsby.

    Ian Lyndley will tell full council tonight in North East Lincolnshire that he thinks the bus lanes on Scartho Road (pictured) make traffic worse and there's no enforcement of them.

    Auditions for the TV show Britain's Got Talent are in Hull today.

    They're taking place at the Princess Quay Shopping Centre from noon.

    It will cost £3m to refurbish Bridlington Town Hall (pictured).

    That's double the original estimate.

    The news was given to members of the East Riding's Cabinet earlier this week.

    A new customer services centre will be created and the council chamber will be modernised.

    Jobcentre staff will also move in.

    Officials say the increased cost is due partly to including maintenance work that will have long-term benefits.

    Councillors in Hull have had to leave the full council meeting due to a protest by the GMB Union.

    They are demonstrating outside the Guildhall this morning.

    Protesters are calling for fair pay and safety standards in the city's construction industry.

    Protesters say they want the council to sign up to a charter protecting construction workers' rights, meaning any company wanting to operate in the city would have to reach certain standards.

  13. 'Bigger names, greater prestige' for extended Tour de Yorkshirepublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 21 September 2017

    The extension of the Tour de Yorkshire from three to four days next year will bring "far-reaching" benefits to the county, the event's organisers have promised.

    Announcing that the Tour will run from Thursday 3 May to Sunday 6 May 2018, Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Sir Gary Verity says it's "absolutely tremendous news".

    "This decision will help us attract even bigger names in the future and allow us to design a more varied and spectacular route," says Sir Gary.

    "Our race is growing in stature all the time and the next two editions will hold even greater prestige given that Yorkshire is also hosting the UCI Road World Championships in 2019."

    The devastating mudslide left hundreds dead and thousands homeless in the Regent district of Freetown in Sierra Leone.

    The Freetown Society in Hull raised £7,000 and the Send A Child To School charity £2,500.

    It's just been announced that an extra day is to be added to the Tour de Yorkshire from 2018.

    Cycling's governing body the UCI has confirmed the men's race will grow to four days and the women's event will also be increasing to two days.

    The popular cycling race was first launched in 2015, following on from the Tour de France's Grand Depart that was held in the county the year before.

    Around 2.2m fans lined the route of this year's event and it was broadcast live in 180 countries around the world.

    The race also brought in an estimated £64m for the region's economy.

  16. Culture city wins enterprising gongpublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 21 September 2017

    Hull has been crowned the most enterprising place in Britain by the government for its "economic growth".

    The current UK City of Culture won two categories in the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy's Enterprising Britain Awards.

    It was praised for its investment in education and training programmes and its ventures in renewable energy, including Siemens' £310m wind turbine blade factory.

    Judges acknowledged the city had "5,000 more jobs and 6,800 more people in employment now compared to 2011".

    Jean Wormwell is from Bridlington and she's angry about the closure of a ward for elderly patients at the town's hospital.

    York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that the Waters Ward - which is an 11-bed ward for elderly patients - will be temporarily closed due to "recruitment pressures."

    They say the ward's often not used to its full capacity and the staff are needed on other wards where there is greater demand.

    But that's not gone down too well with local residents who believe this is one step closer to the hospital being closed for good.

    The 'Discover Cleethorpes Heritage' programme is a five-year regeneration scheme with the majority of funds available as grants to building owners to repair and reinstate original features.

    There is a flood alert in place first thing this morning due to strong winds and waves.

    It's in the Humber Estuary from Spurn Point to Winestead Outfall and will last till 08:30 this morning.

    A flood alert means flooding is possible so be aware.

    A second flood alert, which was in place for this morning on the North Sea Coast at Bridlington was due to clear by 08:00.
