  3. Scunthorpe Market plans 'will increase footfall'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 23 October 2017

A planned refurbishment and redevelopment of Scunthorpe Market will increase the number of customers, according to North Lincolnshire Council.

    Campaign posters

Some traders say they fear plans for a facelift for the market could put them out of business after stalls are moved outside while the work is going on.

But Rob Waltham, from North Lincolnshire Council, says the refurbishment is aimed at benefiting traders and local residents:

    Quote Message

The market is not the building that exists currently. For me the market is about improving Scunthorpe town centre and that's an important dynamic we've all got to embrace. We also need to make sure that we've got a market in which we've got really excessive footfall. We're putting the town council offices...and other business in there. All those are a mix that will increase the footfall."

  8. 'Incapacitant' spray trial at Hull Prisonpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 23 October 2017

    Clare Crooks
    BBC Local Live, Hull

Staff at Hull Prison will be among the first in the country to have access to a spray aimed at helping them deal with violent prisoners.

    Hull Prison

It's one of just four jails to try out the "incapacitant" spray, which is similar to the pepper spray used by police officers.

The prisons minister says prisons officers having access to the spray will ensure staff have the right tools for the job.

The Prison Officers Association said the measure was "long overdue".

But the Howard League for Penal Reform claims using pepper-like spray will add to violence and disorder rather than prevent it:

    Quote Message

The Ministry of Justice should be preventing disorder and violence, not adding to it. Increasing the weapons of staff will not serve to protect them in a prison system that is failing them, prisoners and victims. I have written to ministers suggesting immediate actions they could take to ease the pressure in prisons, but in the long run, radical reform is required."

Frances Crook, Chief executive, Howard League for Penal Reform

    David Burns and Julia Murray

Julia Murray (pictured) took time out from her stall to tell me she believes the council's plans are not practical and there are no assurances they'll be able to return to the site:

    Quote Message

We do feel that if the market goes from this site, it won't come back to this site."

    Julia Murray, Market trader
