  2. Air museum move for Amy Johnson replica plane in Hullpublished at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

    Anne-Marie Tasker
    Journalist, BBC Look North

A replica of a plane flown by the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia is to be moved from Hull's Paragon Station to an air museum in North Yorkshire.

    Gipsy Moth

The plane was created by inmates at Hull Prison earlier this year to honour Amy Johnson, who was born in the city and who completed her historic flight from London to Darwin in 19 days in 1930.

The Ministry of Justice says the replica is to be moved to the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington, North Yorkshire, as there is no suitable location within Hull due to the plane's size.

The ministry says it's "delighted" the plane, which was built to celebrate Hull City of Culture 2017, has found a permanent home alongside other Amy Johnson exhibits at the aviation museum.

Despite this, Leonard Brown, who designed the replica plane, says he's disappointed it's leaving Hull:

    Quote Message

I had the pleasure on Thursday to meet her Majesty the Queen and show her the plane and speak to her about it, which was fantastic. Now we find out that it's not ours and it's going. I am not pleased."

    Plastic on beach

The comments come after the most recent episode of Blue Planet II, which showed a whale calf whose death could have been caused by plastic pollution.

The Chancellor Philip Hammond mentioned it in his Budget speech yesterday, claiming he would "investigate" the possibility of a tax on single-use plastics.

Dr Catherine Waller says the government needs to do everything it can to tackle the problem:

    Quote Message

When they started charging for plastic bags that cut their use dramatically. Maybe we should be looking at getting refunds if you take plastic bottles to be recycled? I think any action the government takes on cutting back on plastic use is a good thing."
