  4. Charity's 'challenging discussions' with city homelesspublished at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2017

The comments, from staff at Emmaus, come after Hull Homeless and Rootless Project (HARP) sparked a debate about the rough sleepers by criticising local people for giving them food, clothes and money.

HARP said people sleeping rough in the city are "choosing to live like this" because they can make "small fortunes" from being given money by passers-by.

Meanwhile, Kelly Thompson, from Emmaus, says: "We can be very proactive with them and physically take them to accommodation which is available to them.

"But ultimately it comes down to choice and we can't force people to make choices they don't want to make."

A group of rough sleepers set up camp at the building, but today that's been cleaned by Hull City Council staff.

The council says it has a "duty to keep the city centre in a sanitary condition".

It adds that members of its outreach team have spoken to people who use the area "offering them accommodation and reassurances that their belongs would be safe".

"No one needs to sleep rough in Hull, especially at Christmas...Clean, warm, dry and secure accommodation places are available immediately for those who want them," the council adds.

  14. Police precept will push up bills next yearpublished at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2017

    Jen Bateman
    BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

Humberside Police will see an increase in their funding next year, but council tax bills will go up as a result.

The forces are being allowed to increase the police precept, but there's no extra government money for core services.

    Humberside PCC Keith Hunter

Police and Crime Commissioner Keith Hunter has called it disappointing.

    Quote Message

A good proportion of the increased funding produced, even if this flexibility is used to its maximum, will be soaked up by inflation."

    Chris Arundel
    BBC Radio Humberside

Health bosses have confirmed they will be going ahead with plans to replace minor injuries units with larger care centres in East Yorkshire.

Under the plans the unit at Hornsea will close and Driffield and Withernsea will be downgraded.

But new centres will be opened in Beverley, Bridlington and Goole.

That's despite protests over the proposals.

Protest at Hornsea Cottage Hospital in November 2016

Hornsea's Mayor says health bosses in the area haven't thought about what effect it will have on people in the town:

    Quote Message

It's not taken into account, particularly in Hornsea, the population during the holiday seasons. Our population probably trebles during the holidays, we are extremely popular. But also, it doesn't take into the account the lack of public transport for anybody who can't afford to run a car."

Members of the Co-Operative are delighted.

Months of planning and bid-writing has come to a successful conclusion and The Ropewalk will remain at the heart of the town in perpetuity. Clare Crooks
    BBC Local Live, Hull

The government is being accused of cutting NHS services in East Yorkshire, despite promising extra funding this winter.

Bridlington is losing some wards while the Minor Injuries Unit at Driffield Hospital is to close following a review.

The area's Conservative MP, Sir Greg Knight, told the House of Commons it was unacceptable but the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt insisted more money was being invested in the service.

It comes as campaigners plan a protest this afternoon.
