  1. Steven Bayes trial continuespublished at 15:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2018

A jury at Hull Crown Court has been told that a Labour Hull City Councillor had thousands of pictures of adult pornography, as well as photos of himself in underwear, on a computer where indecent images of children were found.

    Steven Bayes

A police expert told the court there is no way to prove if the images on the computer had ever been viewed or if the defendant knew they were there.

In November last year the Government announced a "full statutory inquiry" would be carried out into the contaminated blood scandal that left at least 2,400 people dead.

About 7,500 people, many with an inherited bleeding disorder called haemophilia, were given blood products infected with hepatitis C and HIV in the 1970s and 80s.

Diana Johnson has campaigned for the inquiry and criticised the time it has taken. Today she welcomed the appointment of Sir Brian Langstaff to the role.

    Quote Message

I expect the inquiry will want to put first and foremost the families impacted by this disaster; that it will receive the funding necessary to engage closely with those affected and the chair will be given the freedom to set the terms of reference independently, in consultation with those affected."

The RMT union says it further compounds what it calls the "shambles" over the future of the East Coast Mainline, which has its HQ in York.

The government announced on Monday that Stagecoach and Virgin would only continue running the East Coast Mainline for a few more months saying they'd "got their numbers wrong".

Labour and the RMT want the government to take over running the service as it has done previously.

But the government says it would have been a waste of money to do that, and says it "maintains a full capability to act as an operator of last resort".

  12. Ancient artefacts found in North Lincolnshirepublished at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2018

Numerous archaeological remains have been found in North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

    Artifacts

The artefacts have been unearthed as part of the onshore construction phase of the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.

    Artefacts

Work has included excavation of two Iron Age settlement sites in North Killingholme, prehistoric farming activity, a Romano-British settlement in Stallingborough and medieval moated sites in Harborough and South Killingholme.

    Quote Message

One of the more interesting finds was a medieval burial found near Killingholme. The individual was not buried at the medieval hospital or cemetery which we know existed three miles to the north west. The body was actually found in the upper level of a field boundary, on the outside of a moated enclosure."

It comes after Yorkshire UKIP MEP Jane Collins (pictured) was found to have libelled Rotherham's three Labour MPs in a speech in 2014 about child sexual exploitation in the town.

Ms Collins was ordered to pay £54,000 in damages plus legal costs, with a total bill estimated to be more than £650,000.

Contractors have been digging to allow cable installations for Orsted's new Hornsea offshore windfarm.

A team of 70 archaeologists has been working on the scheme and key finds so far include:

    • Two human burials, one medieval and one Roman, near Killingholme
    • Pottery, animal bone, coins, fragmented brooches and quernstones
    • Shells, with oysters seeming to have been a particular favourite in Tetney during Roman times
    • Bronze Age pottery at a site in Holton-le-Clay
    • Late prehistoric Romano-British settlement activity in Tetney
    • An "unexpected" Anglo-Saxon settlement in Laceby
    • Two medieval salt production sites in North Coates

Mili Radjic, a project manager from Wessex Archaeology, says conditions have made it hard to excavate artefacts - but the team has battled on:

    Quote Message

It was challenging. Lincolnshire clay is unforgiving, but archaeologists are well used to this We had 70 people working on the scheme through all sorts of weather conditions."

  18. Hull City owners cancel meeting with supporterspublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2018

Hull City's owners have cancelled a planned meeting with supporters groups over comments made in the press.

    KCom stadium

The meeting was supposed to be held last night to help ease relations between the club and its supporters and reach agreement on issues like offering concessions to children and OAPs.

In a statement vice chairman Ehab Allam said they had ignored the action by a groups of fans during previous meetings, like being given 'Allam's Out' scarves as a Christmas present.

Ehab Allam says the club is still committed to continuing open dialogue with fans.

    Quote Message

In light of recent comments made in the local media by the Supporters' Trust, which the Club considers to be a thinly veiled threat of further disruptive action, we had no alternative but to postpone this evening’s meeting. We hope the threat of further disruptive action can be retracted, so we can continue the next meeting with all parties in attendance.
