  2. Could 'free ports' give Humber economic boost?published at 11:28 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

Free ports allow goods to be imported without incurring tariffs.

According to consultancy and construction company MACE, integrating Free Ports with Northern enterprise zones would create almost 80,000 high value jobs across Yorkshire and the Humber, while adding £4.7bn a year to the region's economy.

Proposals to create a series of free ports across the north of England are gaining momentum within the government and are seen by some as a way of minimising any impact from Brexit.

Simon Bird, from ABP Humber at Immingham, says it has something they've been long campaigning for.

The organisation also says a further 17 victims were identified in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire last year but but it's struggling for funding to help deal with the problem.

The organisation has only received around £4,000 since it was established in 2015 and most of its work is being done by volunteers.

The Chair of The Humber Modern Slavery Partnership Steve Clay believes more needs to be invested in tackling modern slavery.

    Quote Message

Last year people contacted us 181 times to tell us about slavery, that's a huge number. We are averaging 30 calls a month. The message is getting out there, but there's so much more we can do."
