  1. M62 shooting: Post mortem results releasedpublished at 16:28 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    A post mortem into the death of Yassar Yaqub has revealed that he was shot and killed by a single officer.

    The 28-year-old from Huddersfield was shot when police stopped a car near junction 24 of the M62 on Monday evening.

    Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigators say they are continuing to examine the firearms and cars that were at the scene.

  2. Widnes Vikings sign Bradford Bulls forwardpublished at 16:19 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    Widnes Vikings have signed Bradford Bulls forward Tom Olbison on a one-year contract, following the liquidation of the former Super League Champions.

    The 25-year-old made more than 140 appearances for the Bulls but was made redundant when the Championship club went into liquidation on Tuesday.

    He had previously signed a new one-year deal with Bradford in November.

    Olbison scored six tries in 29 appearances for Bradford in the Championship last season.

  6. Polish ambassador to thank Leeds man who raised money for truck driverpublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    The Polish Ambassador is going to personally thank a West Yorkshire truck driver who led a fundraising campaign to help the family of a man who was killed in the attack on the Berlin Christmas Market.

    David Duncan's actions helped to raise nearly £190,000 in just a few weeks. 

    Lucasz Urban was shot and stabbed when his lorry was hijacked by a terrorist who drove it into the crowded market - killing 12 people.

    Mr Urban was buried last week in his home village in Poland. His funeral was attended by Polish President Andrzej Duda and a German diplomat.

  9. Taxi driver could hold key to Huddersfield muggingpublished at 14:05 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    A taxi driver, who helped a man who was mugged in Huddersfield, is being sought by police.

    It happened as the 22-year-old man was out enjoying new year's eve celebrations with friends when a group of four or five men pushed him to the ground and punched him.

    They then stole his phone and left. It happened between 02:00 and 03:00 on John William Street. 

    He suffered cuts and bruises to his head and face and two of his back teeth were broken.

    A couple from Wyke have been speaking for the first time since they were subjected to a violent robbery exactly a year ago.

    Peter and Sue Hewson were threatened and assaulted by a gang of men who burst into their house.

    The robbers escaped with a haul of jewellery worth £220,000 and the couple's Mercedes, which has never been found. 

    Last month, four men were jailed for a total of 65 years for a string of violent robberies including that from the Hewsons and others across Bradford, Leeds and Kirklees last January.

    You may remember a few years back, Leeds said farewell to HMS Ark Royal the famous warship that the city was affiliated to.

    Well, no need to feel sad about that any more, we've got a new one say hello to HMS Audacious:

    The submarine is in the final stages of construction at the BAE Systems Maritime factory in Barrow-in-Furness. 

    Leeds’ links with Royal Navy warships goes back to Ark Royal III which was ‘adopted’ by the city shortly before she was sunk in 1941. 

    In response the people of Leeds raised nearly £9m to build a replacement; the Ark Royal IV which served for 25 years.

  12. Man injured after fight in city centre McDonald'spublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    A man was taken to hospital following a fight in the Briggate branch of McDonald's in Leeds yesterday afternoon.

    It happened at about 16:00 when the 26-year-old man suffered a non life-threatening injury.  

    Two other men were arrested at the scene and third was taken into custody later.

  13. Saltaire Festival in doubt if more volunteers aren't foundpublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    Organisers of the Saltaire Festival in Bradford say this year's event can only go ahead if they get enough volunteers.

    It's been running for the last 12 years and last year attracted 35,000 visitors. 

    The people in charge of it say that they need an extra 10 helpers to organise the event and about another 50 volunteers on the weekend itself.

    The team are holding a meeting tonight for people to go to if they're interested, external.

  14. Bradford Bulls: 10 parties interested in creating new club after liquidationpublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    The Rugby Football League says it has received 10 expressions of interest in creating a new club in Bradford.

    Bradford Bulls were liquidated on Tuesday after the Championship club's administrators were unable to find a suitable buyer.

    The RFL has said the new Bradford side will take the place of the old one in the second tier but start the season with a 12-point deduction.

    They have set a deadline of Monday, 9 January for bids to be submitted.

    The news on Tuesday that the Bradford Bulls were being liquidated was a hammer blow for many fans hopeful that the club could be saved.

    The Championship club's administrators were unable to find a suitable buyer. Often in sport great success, or huge failure, can be traced back to one defining moment.

    Crews from Calderdale, Bradford and Kirklees were called to deal with it.  

    Fire officers say that the entire building was alight, there have been no reports of injuries.

  17. Watch: Dad of man who died in M62 police shootingpublished at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    About 100 people attended a vigil last night at the spot where a man was shot dead in a police operation on Monday.

    Yassar Yaqub, 28, from Huddersfield, was shot when police stopped a car near junction 24 of the M62 on Monday evening. 

    Mourners laid flowers and displayed a banner in his memory.

    People in Leeds have been given longer to have their say on plans to build a Go Ape assault course in Roundhay Park.

    People did have until tomorrow to tell the council what they thought to the idea, but that's now been extended until 17 January.

    Leeds City Council say that they extended it because they wanted to"make sure that everyone has the chance to have their say, external, especially as the busy Christmas period is now over."

    Fire crews were called to deal with a car fire out in rural Kirklees overnight.

    The vehicle was caught light on the A635 Barnsley Road, about a mile past the Dunkirk Pub.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue attended the scene, there were no reports of injuries.
