    West Yorkshire had the highest rate of serious crime per head than any other force area in England and Wales last year.

    Figures obtained by BBC Yorkshire show that our county had 90 offences per 1000 population in 2015/16. The England and Wales average was 68 crimes per 1000 people.

    Last year the Office for National Statistics introduced the "crime severity score" (below), it showed that West Yorkshire had the highest score in England and Wales at 13.6, the average was 10.1.

    A large fire broke out at a site in Triangle near Halifax last night.

    Crews from Calderdale, Bradford and Kirklees were called to deal with it.  

    Fire officers say that the entire building was alight, there have been no reports of injuries.

  5. Kadeena Cox: 'Try living life as a ticking time bomb'published at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    Paralympian Kadeena Cox has reacted following the suspension of her UK Sport funding.

    Yesterday the organisation announced that they were withdrawing the cash because she was taking part in the Channel 4 programme "The Jump".

    But last night the athlete, who has multiple sclerosis (MS), tweeted that "people should imagine living life as a ticking time bomb" before judging her.

  6. M62 police shooting: Yassar Yaqub's family attend vigilpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    Dozens of people have attended a vigil at the spot where a man was shot dead in a police operation.

    Friends and family of Yassar Yaqub, 28, from Huddersfield, laid flowers and displayed a banner in his memory.

    He was shot when police stopped a car near junction 24 of the M62 on Monday evening.

    Traffic on the motorway slowed as about 100 people, including the dead man's parents, gathered near the site to lay flowers and light candles.

    A boy has died after an a car hit him on private property in Lofthouse.

    It happened at 14:14 and West Yorkshire Police say the boy died at the scene after receiving serious injuries.  

    A number of ambulances and police vehicles attended as well as the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. 

  14. More people arrested for drink driving in 2016published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    West Yorkshire Police say they arrested 253 people during their anti-drink and drug driving campaign over Christmas.

    That compares with 239 the previous year. Most of this year's arrests were made in Leeds and happened on Friday, Saturday or Sunday during December.

    The figures show 155 people have been charged - also slightly down on the 2015 campaign.

    Cricket and rugby fans could soon be able to cheer on their heroes from two brand new stands at Leeds' Headingley Stadium.

    It's been recommended by Leeds council planning officers that councillors back an application for the new stands; one at the cricket ground, the other at the rugby stadium.

    Ex-England, Leeds and Manchester United striker Alan Smith will be in temporary charge of Notts County for Saturday's match at Morecambe, reports BBC Nottingham.

    The Magpies sacked manager John Sheridan on Monday, after a run of nine successive defeats left them one point above the League Two relegation zone.

    Smith, 36, has been a player-coach at Notts since joining in May 2014.

  20. Man hurt after robbery at Halifax pubpublished at 16:21 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    A man has been treated for minor stab wounds after a break-in at a pub in near Halifax.

    The man, a member of staff at the Shibden Mill Inn, caught two men after they broke into the pub. They threatened him and left with "a number of items" according to West Yorkshire Police.

    The robbery happened between 05:15 and 05:45 on Monday. The two men are described as white, in their 20s , about 5ft 10" tall wearing grey tracksuits and trainers.
