  6. M62 police shooting: Mercedes and Jaguar involved in 'pre-planned operation'published at 07:49 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Nick Garnett
    BBC Radio 5 Live

West Yorkshire Police are calling it a "pre-planned operation" and looking at the number of vehicles involved it's fairly clear this wasn't a response to something they did not know about.

The operation appears to have been planned around this car.

It appears to have been heading off the M62 eastbound around 5.30pm last night heading towards Huddersfield when it was stopped by at least one unmarked police car that had been following it.

The two cars at the centre of it are a Mercedes E-Class and a Jaguar.

The car, which is still there this morning, has been boxed in and it was shortly after this that a shot was fired and a man died.

Down on the slip road now there's an almost eerie quiet - just a couple of police vehicles with the lights on, a couple more gathered around a police cordon.

There's a relatively small area cordoned off by blue and white police tape, but behind it is what looks like a set of clipped together fences and blacked out screens stretched across those fences and it's behind there that this major incident is being investigated.

  9. M62 police shooting: Eyewitness recalls 'frenetic' scenepublished at 07:17 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    BBC Radio Leeds

Eyewitness Rahul Tandon, who lives in Halifax, told BBC Radio Leeds he was driving the first car to be stopped by police on the slip road at junction 24 of the M62 as the drama unfolded.

"As we pulled off the motorway we could see a lot of police vehicles, a lot of flashing lights," he said.

"We were basically the first car that was stopped by police and we just waited and waited. Over the next 10 or 15 minutes there was frenetic activity as more and more police vehicles arrived.

"At about 6.15 to 6.20 policemen were running up the slope to the ambulance and beckoning them to come quickly."

He said the police eventually told him and other drivers to reverse back up the slip road and on to the M62 to leave the scene.
