    Armed police have arrived at the home of a man who was shot by police in Huddersfield on Monday.

    A number of vehicles arrived at Yasser Yaqub's home in Rudding Street, apparently to search the property.

    Officers with guns could be seen at the front and back of the property as a large number of relatives left the house.

    More police went inside and at least five police vehicles were parked in surrounding streets, including a dog van.

    A woman who lives near the scene of a fatal shooting by police in Huddersfield has told the BBC what she saw.

    Shahnaz Malik, 54, said she witnessed "a swarm" of police officers as she looked out from her back garden.

    "It was surreal. It was like time had stood still, so many police buzzing around," she said.

    "It's quite frightening. [Ainley Top] is a little village and we all sort of know who's who.

    "It's absolutely horrendous. This is a major incident. Somebody has been shot and killed."

    West Yorkshire Police have revealed more about last night's operation which led to the death of a man in Huddersfield.

    Yassar Yaqub, 28, died after police opened fire at junction 24 of the M62 at Ainley Top at around 18:00 on Monday.

    Five people were arrested as part of the operation - three at the scene in Huddersfield and a further two in Bradford.

    Five people are being questioned by police after an incident in Huddersfield where a man named locally as Yassar Yaqub was shot by police.

    Mr Yaqub died after the incident which took place at around 18:00 on Monday on the sliproad of the M62 at Ainley Top.

    West Yorkshire Police said it was a pre-planned operation and not terror-related.

    No officers were injured in the incident, which has been referred to the police watchdog, the IPCC, external.

    A man who died after being shot by police on a sliproad of the M62 yesterday has been named locally as Yassar Yaqub. 

    Five people were arrested as armed police closed in on a number of suspects in the pre-planned operation on Monday evening.

    Three were involved in the incident, a further two were arrested a short time later in Bradford.

    Following the shooting of a man near junction 24 of the M62 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson said he was made aware of the incident yesterday and had been updated by the Chief Constable, Dee Collins.

    "The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have now launched an investigation following a mandatory referral to them and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage until more details are known,” he said in a statement.

    A man has died in a police shooting during an operation near the M62.

    The incident has been referred to the IPCC - but who are they and what do they do?

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission, external (IPCC) oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales. 

    It is not part of the police and makes its decisions entirely independently of government.

    Police forces are obliged to refer their most serious cases to the IPCC regardless of whether a complaint has been made. 

    It may then investigate on its own or oversee the police force's own investigation.

  20. M62 police shooting: From the scenepublished at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Gemma Wilson, a councillor for nearby Lindley, was coming back from a trip to the cinema with her children when she saw the police vehicles and aftermath of the incident. 

    The Conservative representative, whose ward takes in nearby streets, said: "I had a few constituents actually give me a ring to ask me what was going on and if I'd heard anything. 

    "People were obviously quite worried about it, but everyone assumed it was a major crash."

    A man died in the police operation at about 18:00 GMT on Monday.
