    Holocaust survivor Iby Knill from Leeds recalls her time in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Nazi-occupied southern Poland.

    She and four friends were taken there in June 1944.

    Iby, who was born in what is now the Czech Republic in 1923, but has spent much of her life in Leeds, said it was their support which kept her going.

    This weekend marks Holocaust Day.

    Police have been investigating an assault on New Year's Day in Harrogate and want to speak to them about it - They need your help to track them down.

    It happened at about 02:00 as a 30-year-old man was walking home with a friend after leaving The Den on Cambridge Road.

    As they reached Cheltenham Crescent they were approached by two men and a woman and the man was punched in the head.

    He fell to the ground and was kicked in the head by the same man leaving him with injuries on his face and shoulder.

    A 13-year-old girl has been injured after she was in collision with a van this morning.

    It happened on Wykebeck Valley Road at about 07:30.

    She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment but her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

    The driver stopped at the scene and has spoken to police about what happened.

    44-year-old Sacha Brookes from Park View Road was sentenced to 27 years in prison. His wife 31-year-old Veselina Daneva was sent to prison for 15 and a half years.

    Her mother Violeta Daneva was sentenced to two years in prison suspended for two years. 46-year-old Jason Shelton Gregory, from Kyle Crescent, was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

    A group formed to fight proposals to increase council tax by up to five times on second homes in the Yorkshire Dales says the move could hit up to three and a half million households and see house prices plummet.

    The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority backed the measure last month, saying it was to try to "halt and then reverse" the decline in the number of young people living in the area.

    It's now consulting with the eight local authorities which form part of the national park, with a view to putting a proposal for a pilot scheme to the Government.

    An emaciated dog has been found dead in a suitcase in a Leeds cemetery - The RSPCA say they're trying to find the person who put it there.

    The four-year-old bull terrier called Leo was found at 11:30 on Wednesday under some shrubs at Harehills Cemetery - he was "crammed into a black suitcase, wrapped in a towel."

    Officers discovered he had been microchipped and once belonged to a person over 200 miles away in Gwent - but when the RSPCA called them they were told he had been rehomed six months ago.

    Mr Ward was attacked in his home on Salisbury Road,Maltby in the early hours of Thursday 1 October 2015. He also had his life savings of £30,000 stolen.

    He died as a result of his injuries five months later.

    There's been anger at the sentence handed to a 15-year-old boy in Leeds for causing the deaths of five people in a car crash.

    The boy - who cannot be identified - admitted five counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

    Ellis, 12, and Elliott Thornton-Kimmitt, 14, died in the crash along with Darnell Harte, 15, Anthony Armour and Robbie Meerun, both 24.

    Elise Dhers the sister of Darnell Harte said outside Leeds Crown Court "Four years is not long enough - four years is not even a year for a life. He will be out in two years' time."

    Supt Lisa Atkinson from West Yorkshire Police said: "The 15-year-old boy who was at the wheel of the stolen car is starting a period in custody, but he also has to live with the deaths of those five people on his conscience for the rest of his life.

    She added "What this terrible incident so painfully illustrates is the appalling human consequences of dangerous driving."

    Archaeologists say they may have discovered one of the earliest examples of a crayon, in North Yorkshire.

    The ochre crayon was discovered near an ancient lake, now covered with peat, near Scarborough.

    Its thought it was used 10,000 years ago for art work and colouring animal skins.

    Dr Andy Needham, from the University of York’s Department of Archaeology, said the latest discovery has helped further our understanding of Mesolithic life.

    He commented: “Colour was a very significant part of hunter-gatherer life and ochre gives you a very vibrant red colour.

    "The object looks exactly like a crayon; the tip is faceted and has gone from a rounded end to a really sharpened end, suggesting it has been used," he added.

    A 15-year-old boy has been detained for four-and-a-half years today for causing the deaths of five people when the stolen car he was driving crashed into a tree in Leeds.

    Ellis Thornton-Kimmitt, 12, and Elliott Thornton-Kimmitt, 14, died in the crash along with Darnell Harte, 15, Anthony Armour and Robbie Meerun, both 24.

    Leeds Crown Court heard the car "split in two" when it hit a tree in Meanwood at 88mph on 25 November.

    After the sentencing, David Holderness, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "The defendant acted in a supremely dangerous way, driving erratically and at speeds of about 88mph in a residential area.

    "Tragically his victims paid the price of the driver’s utter irresponsibility with their lives. I hope the sentences passed today are of some comfort to them in their grief.”
