    This little creature gave a Bradford shopper a shock when she emerged from a bunch of bananas:

    The female whiptail lizard was hidden inside the fruit when the man bought it last Thursday from Bradford Vegetable Market.

    He spotted the reptile in his van on the way home from the market and called the RSPCA before putting it into a tub.

    The RSPCA took her to a specialist reptile centre and she's now being looked after at Reptilia, in Ossett.

    Official figures show recorded crime in Yorkshire and the Humber increased by 18% between September 2016 and September last year.

    South Yorkshire saw a large rise in violent crime - up 62% with homicide rates increasing in North Yorkshire by 40%.

    West Yorkshire saw a 29% rise in sexual offences and East yorkshire had a 40% increase in house burglaries.

    Nationally the figures also show a rise, but the separate crime survey which is based on interviews around the country suggests crime has continued to fall.

    Who is Sara Khan?

    • She describes herself on her website, external as a "born human rights activist"
    • She has campaigned for women's rights within British Muslim communities for over 20 years.
    • Ms Khan was born and raised in Bradford, she worked as a hospital pharmacist
    • She launched the Inspire charity in 2008 - its aim is to challenge extremism and promote gender equality.
    • In September 2005 she sat on the Home Office's Tackling Extremism and Radicalisation Working Group
    • She has also worked with the education department and the Department for International Development.
    • In 2015, she was named in the BBC Woman's Hour Power List.

    Susanne Pearson, who escaped from war-torn Prague aged 11, is marking World Holocaust Memorial Day today by appearing in a short film, screened as part of the city’s commemorations.

    Born in Czechoslovakia in 1928, Susanne lived with her parents in Prague and was then among the 10,000 predominantly Jewish children offered an escape route out of mainland Europe by Britain in the nine months leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War, through the Kindertransport scheme.

    A school in the Dearne Valley has set up a project to cut the cost of the school prom.

    Dearne Advanced Learning Centre in Goldthorpe, Barnsley has collected donations of dresses and suits, and set up their own hire service ahead of the year 11 prom this summer.

    For £10 you can hire a frock that could be worth hundreds of pounds.

    Skipton scooped the award for Best Large Speciality Market for Skipton Christmas Markets which attracts thousands of people every year.

    And Todmorden Market won Best indoor Market.
