    Aerial

It means 867 homes will be built every year until 2033 - this is despite government figures saying the number should be higher, at about 1,070.

The decision by councillors to approve the local plan recommendations wasn't unanimous.

Councillor Ian Gillies, who has responsibility for planning, said he couldn't support the proposals in their current form and asked for the decision to be deferred.

He said he had concerns after listening to developers who said about 20% of the proposed homes "were not achievable".

But his fellow executive members disagreed and the plan will now go to another consultation before an independent inspector considers the proposals.

Yesterday, the firm's account director said work was being paused indefinitely because of concerns over the safety or their staff.

There have been daily clashes at Meersbrook Park Road for more than a week.

The tree-felling and replacement programme is part of Sheffield City Council's £2bn Streets Ahead project, which the authority says is to improve roads and footpaths in the city.

About 5,500 trees have been cut down since 2012.

The authority insists those earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

However, campaigners say many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which should not be cut down.

South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner said he had considered their application for public funds for legal fees but refused them.

  11. Listen: 'Smoke and mirrors' over hospital's futurepublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2018

Campaigners fear a North Yorkshire hospital could face more cuts and are describing a consultation over its future as "closure by stealth".

The trust which runs Northallerton's Friarage Hospital is currently sifting through hundreds of responses from a series of meetings as it puts together plans for its future.

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says it's struggling to recruit A&E consultants and other staff to the hospital, but nothing about its future has been decided as yet.
