  12. Tree replacement scheme remains on holdpublished at 16:16 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2018
    Breaking

No new date has been set for work to restart on Sheffield's tree-felling and replacement programme, the city council has confirmed.

    Fallen treeImage source, PA

Last month, contractors Amey paused tree-felling work over concerns about the safety of the firm's staff and the council told BBC Radio Sheffield work would resume this week. However, that hasn't happened.

The council says Amey is continuing to "review on-site working practices" and there's no date in place for them to get back to work on the tree-replacement part of the contract.

Sheffield City Council, which is planting new trees after removing existing ones, insists the trees earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

However, many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which campaigners say should be saved.

Instead they say amendments should be made to surrounding pavements and roads.

    Adam Pinder-Smith
    BBC Yorkshire Live

As we reported earlier, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spent the early hours of this morning dealing with a large fire at the former Dalton Progressive Working Men's Club on Doncaster Road in Rotherham.

The fire is now under control, but traffic is still being affected.

Here's what you need to know as we head into Friday's rush hour:

    • The southbound side of the A630 travelling from Rotherham to Doncaster is fully open
    • The nortbound stretch still has one lane closed between Dalton Lane and Magna Lane
    • Later tonight, temporary lights will be installed on that stretch for safety reasons and this partial closure could remain in place overnight and into the weekend

Looking at speed sensors, traffic is heavy in that area and on surrounding routes at the moment.
