Richard Caborn (pictured), who is one of three men standing to be the Labour candidate, says the move would help promote women's interests in the South Yorkshire economy.
There have been criticisms of the Labour selection process as no female candidates have decided to stand for the role.
The South Yorkshire mayoral election is due to be held in May.
It's emerged children at several North Yorkshire schools have been taken to hospital after taking super-strength ecstasy.
North Yorkshire's Director of Public Health has written to parents warning of the dangers.
The letter has been sent to parents of pupils at secondary schools across Richmondshire.
It warns of Orange Tesla tablets circulating in the area.

This Victorian terrace in the desirable Leeds suburb of Chapel Allerton has an intriguing past, external.
A century ago, it was a hotbed of revolutionary activity and played an integral role in a campaign that would change the political and social landscape of Britain.
A car fire in Rotherham is believed to have been started deliberately.
Firefighters were called to put out the burning Land Rover on Durham Way in Parkgate last night.

Anyone with information about the blaze is being asked to contact police.
York City fans are urging the club's chairman to accept a compromise that would leave them with only a 5% share in the club.
It follows a heated meeting last night where the Supporters' Trust discussed Jason McGill's call for them to hand over their full 25% shareholding.
In return, Mr McGill says he would continue to put money into York City until its move to a new community stadium.
The meeting heard how Mr McGill used £90,000 of his own money last week to make sure the players got paid.
But Supporters' Trust Chairman John Lacey says Mr McGill is so far not budging on the issue of ownership:
Police in Huddersfield say they're investigating claims a gun was fired at a group of men in a "targeted attack" last night.
It happened at about 23:45 on Almondbury Bank and West Yorkshire Police say initial reports suggest a gun was fired at men who were running down an alleyway.
Officers say the men haven't yet come forward but "extensive enquiries" are under way to pinpoint who was involved.

Campaigners calling for a change to the voting system have begun fasting for 24 hours in Sheffield.
Members of the Hungry4Democracy group are calling for a system of proportional representation to be introduced.
Among protesters who'll be fasting for 24 hours in Sheffield is former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett.
The protest comes exactly 100 years ago since some women finally won the right to vote.
If the forecasters are right, this beautiful bed of cyclamen outside Ripon Cathedral may be about to disappear under a blanket of snow.
Until then let's enjoy this proliferation of petals...
...It might be the last we see of them for today at least:
West Yorkshire has two of the most congested roads outside London, according to a new study.
According to Inrix, which provides traffic information, the two roads to avoid are the A657 in Bradford and the A638 in Dewsbury.
The figures show the A657, between the A658 and Victoria Street, would cause delays of nearly two days a year if used on a daily basis.
The report also suggests regularly using a five-mile stretch of the A638 from Cooper Bridge is the equivalent of a day-and-a-half being lost to jams.
Nationally, drivers waste an average of 31 hours stuck in traffic, in what's now the world's 10th most congested country, according to Inrix.
Any early snow in Yorkshire will clear, then turning cold with sunny spells.

The Representation of the People Act, passed on 6 February 1918, gave women over 30 and "of property" the vote.
Some of those attending the march in Harrogate will dress as suffragettes and carry placards.
Viviane Morris, from the Harrogate Branch of the Women's Equality Party, says a century on, there's still some way to go in women's fight to be treated equally:

Leeds United are expected to announce Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom as their new head coach later.
Heckingbottom emerged at the top of the Leeds wanted list when it was understood the club had activated the release clause in his contract.
The former Bradford City defender spent his entire career in England before taking charge of his home town club, which he led to Championship promotion and which won the JPT Trophy.
He has a reputation of developing young players and he also made an impressive start in the Championship last year before seeing key players leave for Aston Villa.
Heckingbottom will arrive leaving Barnsley fourth from bottom after one win in the last 16 matches.
He'll be tasked with reviving Leeds' fading play-off hopes, starting with this Saturday's Yorkshire derby at Sheffield United.
A campaign is under way to recognise the achievements of a group of women in Sheffield who petitioned Parliament to get the vote for women.
Their efforts took place almost 70 years before some women actually first got the vote, which happened exactly 100 years ago today.
The women were members of what was called the Sheffield Female Political Association.
Local historian Joy Bullivant says she's keen they are recognised:

York City supporters have been told that chairman Jason McGill (pictured) had to put £90,000 of his own money into the football club last week to ensure the players were paid.
York City's auditor Steve Kilmartin made the revelation at a heated Supporters' Trust Annual General Meeting last night.
Mr Kilmartin also told about 100 members of the trust that the club will lose around £900,000 this year.
Jason McGill wants the trust to hand over their 25% shareholding, or contribute £250,000, to help keep the club going until it moves into the Community Stadium in 16 months time.

"Shocking" levels of drug use at a Doncaster jail are due to the large number of inmates connected to organised crime, prison inspectors have said.
About 200 of the 1,000 prisoners at HMP Lindholme with organised crime links "continue to ply their trade", inspectors found.
And they have questioned whether the jail is a suitable place for such inmates.
Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service said it was working to disrupt organised crime gangs.
The report of an inspection in October said the threat posed to inmates by illicit drugs "remained severe".
