    Unemployment in Yorkshire and the Humber has gone up by 5,000, with the region now having the second highest rate of unemployment in the country.

    Nationally, UK unemployment has increased slightly for the first time in two years.

    The rate of unemployment rose from 4.3% to 4.4% for the three months to the end of December, the Office for National Statistics said.

    Wages grew by an average of 2.5%, up from 2.4% the previous month - the numbers of unemployed nationally rose by 46,000 to 1.47 million.

    The funeral of Sir Lawrence Byford is being held today in Harrogate.

    The former police chief who wrote a report into failings during the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper died earlier this month in Pannal aged 92.

    His report changed the way police investigations into serial killers were carried out.

    He was also a former President and Chairman of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

    South Yorkshire Police say more than 100 knives and bladed articles were seized last week during a county-wide operation.

    Officers recovered 106 knives and arrested 10 people , five for knife related offences - as a result of Operation Sceptre, external.

    Eighteen areas of land were searched, 39 people were stopped and searched and five raids were carried out.

    A West Yorkshire MP is calling for shared parental leave for freelancers and people who are self-employed.

    Tracy Brabin, the MP for Batley and Spen, will propose a new bill in Parliament today, which would also include statutory maternity pay.

    The current system means that only the mother can claim financial help from the government if she decides to stop working after a baby is born.

    But Ms Brabin wants parents to be able to choose which one of them stays home.

    South Yorkshire Police are pledging a dedicated support team for victims of child sex abuse.

    It comes after they revealed yesterday that more than 100 extra victims of child exploitation have come forward in Rotherham.

    Operation Stovewood is looking into the abuse that took place in the town between 1997 and 2013.

    The total number of victims is now known to cover more than 1500 cases. The 2014 Jay Report estimated that there were 1400. Kate Richardson is charge of supporting victims for the operation.

    Police chiefs are recommending changes to the law as a purge on dog attacks on livestock in North Yorkshire.

    More than 500 sheep and other livestock have been killed or injured by dogs across the county in recent years.

    Now it's being proposed officers should be able to take the DNA of dogs so they can be traced and owners should have to put their pets on a lead when walking through fields with livestock.

    A dog killed 14 of his lambs, he says it's shocking when it happens.

    There's criticism of Leeds City Council after the fifth ram-raid in the city centre in 10 months.

    The manager of the Rolex shop, Andrew Duffy, says they're not doing enough to prevent the robberies.

    His store is the latest to be targeted after a car drove through a shopping centre and reversed into the shop window on Sunday.

    He says the council has to take swift action to install more safety bollards.

    A Scarborough man has been jailed for 15 months after being convicted of a child sex offence.

    He was also given two months concurrent for publishing an obscene article.

    Lee Traquair Hull, aged 34, of Seamer Road, Scarborough, pleaded guilty at York Crown Court at an earlier hearing to causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

    Det Con Jon Kenworthy from North Yorkshire Police's Serious Crime Team said the sentencing shows the seriousness of his offending.
