    School children at a South Yorkshire primary school are unable to go on a school trip tomorrow after their mini-bus was stolen earlier this afternoon.

    Staff at Goldthorpe Primary School say the bus was taken at about 14:45 today.

    The silver 17-seat bus was last seen heading down Doncaster Road towards Hickleton and the A1(M).

    The registration number is YT14 NBL.

    Leeds-based supermarket chain Asda has reported rising sales in the final months of last year and said it had a strong Christmas trading period.

    It reported a 0.5% increase in like-for-like sales - the most closely watched measure of sales, which strips out the effect of new stores.

    It is the third quarter of sales growth for Asda, which had previously seen three years of falling sales.

    Asda is owned by Walmart, which reported a 2.6% increase in like-for-like sales during its fourth quarter.

    However, the US retail giant saw profits fall 42% to $2.2bn (£1.6bn).

    Plans to double the number of bus journeys made in Leeds in the next 10 years have been announced by the city council.

    The project will be funded by cash originally earmarked for the trolley bus scheme, which was rejected in 2016.

    The plan is to give buses priority over cars on three key routes into Leeds - from Bradford, Alwoodley and Oakwood and Roundhay.

  7. Man jailed over Sheffield rapepublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

    A 28-year-old man has been jailed for eight years after raping a woman in Sheffield.

    David Vieira Lopez, of Homestead Road, Sheffield, threatened a 36-year-old woman with a knife before raping her in the Wilson Street area of the city last June.

    Police were able to secure DNA evidence from the scene after the victim was able to call 999 during the attack and lead officers to the scene.

    Lopez appeared before Sheffield Crown Court earlier today where he was sentenced to eight years in prison and was also placed on the Sex Offenders' Register.

    Potential shoplifters in Wakefield are being warned against stealing from shops in a new crack-down in the city.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're warning thieves by saying "lift it- and we’ll lift you!" as they launch the zero-tolerance approach.

    Shopkeepers are being encouraged to use CCTV systems and to report details of shoplifting.

    Officers have pledged that all shoplifting offences reported will be pursued.

    The Mayoress of the Borough of Scarborough is to have her hair shaved off next week as she tries to encourage women to have mammograms.

    Cherry Smith was diagnosed with stage three invasive breast cancer at the end of last year.

    She is just outside the age bracket for being offered a mammogram, but asked for one because of her family's history of the disease.

    If she hadn't gone for breast screening she wouldn't have know she had breast cancer. She is now having chemotherapy and has decided that before her hair falls out she'll have her head shaved for charity.

    It's due to take place at Scarborough Town Hall next Monday.

  12. Total of '110 designated suspects' over Rotherham abusepublished at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

    A senior officer leading the investigation into historic child abuse in Rotherham says the team has identified 110 "designated suspects".

    Paul Williamson, who is leading Operation Stovewood at the National Crime Agency, also said there are 144 officers working on 34 distinct investigations.

    During a briefing in Sheffield, it was also revealed that the number of potential victims and survivors has increased from 1,400 to 1,510.

    At least 1,300 victims and survivors are female.

    To date the investigation has collated, analysed and electronically recorded material from local agencies covering the 16 years between 1997 and 2013.

    The Ryedale Folk Museum is looking for a volunteer to watch their clocks and get them ticking again.

    The museum says they have some beautiful clocks in their collection and it would be great to see them all working.

    The museum is holding their volunteer recruitment day tomorrow between 1000 and 1600.

    A man from Wakefield has been jailed for 13 years after he built a bomb in his home.

    Vladimir Madle, of Westgate End, Wakefield, was convicted in December of manufacturing drugs and explosives following a week-long trial at Leeds Crown Court.

    The offences were not terror-related.

    A search of the 42-year-old's house revealed the IED, fuses and other elements, plus small packages containing various chemicals.

    Madle pleaded guilty to possession of a weapon, producing a Class A drug and five offences of possessing an explosive substance in suspicious circumstances.

    He was found guilty of possessing a Class A drug with intention to supply, producing a Class A drug, and four offences of possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury.

    Things are about to change on some of Leeds buses.

    These are the newest double-deckers that will be hitting the city's streets from April:

    Not only are First Leeds changing the colour scheme of their buses, the new vehicles will be the cleanest on the road and are fitted with USB phone charging points.

    The city's biggest bus operator also says the new buses' exhaust emissions are up to 95% cleaner than some of the older fleet.

    They'll join the network on 1 April, on the one and six services which go through Headingley.

  17. Thousands sign East Coast main line petitionpublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

    A petition calling for the East Coast main line to be nationalised has been handed in to the government.

    Activists are calling on Transport Secretary Chris Grayling not to bail out the franchise operated by Stagecoach and Virgin.

    Earlier this month, Chris Grayling said that Virgin Trains East Coast would only continue to run the London to Edinburgh service for a "small number of months".

    This morning a group called We Own It has handed in a 30,000 signature petition to the Department For Transport calling for the service to be brought back into public ownership.

    A new laser art installation will light up the sky above Barnsley this month.

    The large-scale light installation called Neon River, will be projected from Barnsley's Digital Media Centre across the Dearne Valley on the evenings of the 23, 24 and 25 of February.

    The beam of light will be visible for up to 10 miles across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

    The work has been commissioned by the Dearne Valley landscape partnership as part of its art of the Dearne project which aims to connect people to the River Dearne.

  20. Police search area of woodland after 'gun' findpublished at 12:57 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

    Police in Leeds are still combing an area of woodland after someone found what appears to be a handgun.

    The discovery was made at about 18:40 yesterday in Batcliffe Wood in Headingley.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're now searching the area.

    Officers have also sent the gun off for examination to see if it is a genuine firearm or not.
