    More than 1,000 personalised number plates will go up for auction in Leeds today.

    The plates include all sorts of words, including royal references like Harry and Meghan.

    It's thought the auction at Oulton Hall will attract bids from all over the world and is expected to raise more than £5m for the Treasury.

    People in North Yorkshire are being given a chance to see what it's like to be a teacher in a secondary school.

    Next Tuesday, North Yorkshire County Council is joining up with White Rose Alliance and Stokesley School to host a "back to school" day.

    The idea is to get more people interested in training to become a teacher and give people the chance to see the job in action.

    Three gunmen fatally shot a man at point-blank range as he sat in his car on the way to to his sister's engagement party, a court in Sheffield has been told.

    The claim has been made in the opening statement of the prosecution's case.

    Aseel Al-Essaie (pictured), 23, suffered massive internal bleeding after being shot in his vehicle on Daniel Hill, in Sheffield, in 2017.

    Matthew Cohen, 29, Dale Gordon, 33, and Keil Bryan, 32, all from Sheffield, are on trial at Sheffield Crown Court and deny murder.

    The trial continues.

    Leeds gymnast Nile Wilson has been named in the England team for the Commonwealth Games.

    The 22-year-old won a bronze medal in the horizontal bar at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

    He's also European Champion and the reigning Commonwealth Champion.

    He's set be among the favourites at the games, which take place in Australia in April.

    What is being described as a large amount of fuel has been stolen from two lorries which were parked in a lay-by near Selby.

    The thefts happened overnight on A63 between Selby swing bridge and the A1041/A63 roundabout.

    North Yorkshire Police believe the thieves crossed fields to get to the trucks.

    A man accused of trying to kill another man with a crossbow is one of the people on a police 'most wanted' list in South Yorkshire.

    Joseph Din, 25, is wanted in an attempted murder investigation after a man was shot through the hand with a crossbow last November.

    It happened in the Gleadless area of Sheffield and later the same day the victim's house in Rotherham was set on fire.

    Work's started on the site of Knottingley Sports Centre ahead of the demolition of the building.

    The centre was closed in February last year after it was decided it was too expensive and dated to maintain, along with Castleford Swimming Pool.

    It's all part of the council's plans for the new Five Towns Leisure and Wellbeing Centre in Pontefract Park.

    Demolition is expected in the next few weeks.

    Dozens of new homes could be built in the Craven area after the district council successfully bid for £493,750 of government cash.

    The Land Release Fund cash is to be spent on sites in Skipton, Ingleton and Sutton-in-Craven.

    The council says it hopes to build about 45 homes on Airedale Avenue in Skipton with 40% of those expected to be affordable housing.

    The Land Release Fund is a partnership with the Local Government Association and the Cabinet Office's One Public Estate programme, which aims to make the best use of council land and resources.

    The funding allows local authorities to develop surplus land which otherwise wouldn't be developed.

    Victims of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham are not being given lasting support, according to a solicitor representing some of them.

    The claim, by David Greenwood, runs counter to police claims we've reported that victims can be assured of support if they come forward.

    Mr Greenwood's comment follows news that more than 100 more child sexual exploitation victims have been identified in Rotherham, bringing the total to more than 1,500.

    Operation Stovewood is examining how the abuse took place in the town between 1997 and 2013.

    Soft Cell - who formed at Leeds Polytechnic in 1978 - have announced they will reunite for one final performance.

    The duo, Marc Almond and Dave Ball, will take to the stage together for the first time in 15 years as they celebrate four decades since they formed.

    They will play London's O2 on Sunday 30 September in what they said will be the band's "ONLY and last EVER show".

    Soft Cell formed in 1978 after Almond met Ball at Leeds Polytechnic and the duo caught the attention of a couple of record labels.

    They last performed together in 2003.

    Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston says his northern accent "held him back" when trying to secure Shakespearean roles on stage.

    The actor star says there is a perception in the industry that "people like me can't be classical".

    Eccleston was born into a working class family on a council estate in Salford in Lancashire in 1964.

    He will appear as Macbeth in a new production at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon, but he had to ask for the role.

    He has played one other Shakespeare role on stage - Hamlet at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds in 2002.

    Three men, one carrying a knife, targeted a house yesterday afternoon on Pinfold Lane, external in the Moss area.

    No-one was hurt during the theft, according to police.

    The North Yorkshire Police force is leading calls for more powers to deal with dogs which attack and kill farm animals.

    The National Police Chiefs Council wants a dog DNA database to be set up to help catch animals suspected of killing livestock.

    It also wants officers to be able to confiscate dogs which attack more than once.

    Two men who ran over and killed a father-of-one in a pub car park have been found guilty of manslaughter.

    Jonathan Binns, 32, was knocked down outside The Scarborough in Thornhill, Dewsbury, on 17 February 2017 by a Ford Fiesta driven by Jaelan Herlt.

    Following a trial at Leeds Crown Court, Herlt and his passenger Khaleem Harris, both 20, were cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter.

    Both men, from Dewsbury, will be sentenced on Friday.
