Work starts today on building a landmark temporary communications mast in West Yorkshire which will be as high as the Eiffel Tower.

Emley Moor MastImage source, BBC/Geograph/Chris Charlesworth

It'll be constructed next to the famous Emley Moor mast, which provides TV and radio to about two million households.

The temporary mast will be 317m (1,040ft) tall and is needed to continue to transmit signals while changes are made to the top of the current mast.

Mark Steele, Head of Operations for Arqiva, which runs the site, says people's viewing and listening pleasure shouldn't be disrupted by the work.

It's expected the temporary mast will be a part of the West Yorkshire skyline for the next four years.

With the news that West Yorkshire's about to get a new landmark, here are a few Emley Moor facts:

    • At 1,084ft high, the Emley Moor mast is the tallest free-standing building in the whole of the UK
    • The lift inside the tower takes seven minutes to get from the ground to the control room at the top
    • In 1969, the second Emley Moor transmitter collapsed (pictured below) after being hit by bad weather and it took two years to build the tower we see today
    • The current transmitter started doing its job in January 1971
    • The mast's foundations penetrate 20ft into the ground
    • The whole structure, including foundations, weighs 11,200 tonnes
