    Leeds Olympic boxing champion Nicola Adams will fight in her home city before the IBF featherweight world title match between Lee Selby and Josh Warrington, it's been announced.

    Adams will face Argentina's Soledad del Valle Frias on the undercard of the title bout fight at Elland Road on 19 May.

    An Olympic gold medal winner in 2012 and 2016, the boxer will be looking to extend her unbeaten 3-0 record since becoming professional.

    Her opponent has contested the world title three times.

    A man who tried to kill his children by attacking them with a hammer before crashing his car into a wall has been told he must serve a longer prison sentence.

    Owen Scott, 29, of Fawley, Hampshire, was jailed for a minimum of 14 years after admitting four counts of attempted murder and dangerous driving after a crash in Penistone, South Yorkshire.

    Solicitor General, Robert Buckland, referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal for being "unduly lenient".

    The Court of Appeal agreed and increased Mr Scott's minimum term from 14 years to 24.

    A paddleboarder, who drifted out of his comfort zone at Cayton Bay, was rescued yesterday evening by Scarborough's inshore lifeboat.

    The RNLI, external said the lifeboat was able to transport the paddleboarder and his board back to the safety of the beach.

  5. Lorry hits rail bridge prompting 'horrendous delays'published at 12:13 British Summer Time 9 May 2018

    A lorry has been badly damaged after hitting a rail bridge in Wakefield.

    No-one was injured in the crash which happened at about 07:45 on Doncaster Road.

    Long road delays were reported around the site of the crash at rush hour, with some describing the tailbacks as "horrendous".

    Emergency services remain at the scene to clear the debris.

  6. Funeral held for 'happiest boy'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 9 May 2018

    The funeral of a three-year-old boy who died at a Leeds sports centre was held held this morning.

    Rocco Wright is thought to have wandered off while his father spoke to an instructor at the David Lloyd Club in Moortown, Leeds on 21 April.

    Mr Wright says he found Rocco moments later, floating face down in the deep end of the pool.

    A post-mortem failed to determine the exact cause of his death.

    Rocco's parents have said they don't blame anyone for what happened and just want to remember their son as the "happiest boy you could ever meet".

    Lewis Dagnall has been appointed as the new Sheffield councillor in charge of the controversial tree replacement programme, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Councillor Bryan Lodge announced this morning he had stood down from his position as Cabinet Member of Environment and Streetscene after being subjected to what he said was "aggressive, nasty and personal" abuse.

    Councillor Dagnall has not yet commented on his new role.

    MPs are due to vote today on plans to tighten newspaper regulations, proposed by Doncaster Labour MP Ed Miliband, external.

    The government scrapped the second stage of the Leveson inquiry in March, saying the media had cleaned up its act and it would harm press freedom.

    Labour hope to overturn that decision in a vote on an amendment to the Data Protection Bill later.

    It proposes launching a new, judge-led inquiry into alleged data protection breaches by national newspapers and other media companies, within three months of the bill becoming law later this year.

    Supply chain issues are being blamed for a delay to the launch of a bike rental scheme in Leeds.

    Ofo, external, the company behind the scheme, had intended to launch next Tuesday, but now say it will have to wait until "shortly before the summer".

    Users of the scheme use a phone app to unlock a bike and are charged 50p for every half-hour they use the bike for.

    Staff at the Hull College Group, which has sites in Hull and Harrogate, are on strike today over planned job cuts.

    The college wants to cut 230 jobs as part of a restructuring plan to deal with a £10m deficit.

    The University and College Union (UCU) claims the plans would see a "third of the workforce" cut.

    Police in Huddersfield are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the fatal stabbing of a man on Wednesday night.

    Officers were called to a property on Bentley Street, Lockwood, at about 23:00 where a man had been found with serious injuries. He died later at the scene.

    A 25-year-old woman's been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

    Ch Insp Ian Scott, the senior investigating officer, said: "The local community will be understandably shocked by these events and we will be supporting them with increased visibility and reassurance patrols."

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    The councillor responsible for Sheffield's tree replacement programme had been concerned about his role for over a month before stepping down from the role earlier today, the leader of Sheffield City Council has said.

    Councillor Bryan Lodge announced this morning he had stood down from his position as Cabinet Member of Environment and Streetscene.

    In a Facebook post, Mr Lodge said the role had been "an interesting/challenging two years".

    A woman's been arrested on suspicion of murder after the fatal stabbing of a man in Huddersfield last night.

    The man was found with serious injuries in the communal area of a residential property on Bentley Street in Lockwood at about 23:00.

    He was treated at the scene but subsequently died, police say.

    A 25-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

    The number of hate crimes reported in South Yorkshire has risen by almost 200% in the last five years - more than 50% higher than the national average.

    Four years ago the number of reports recorded by South Yorkshire Police stood at 567, but in 2017 that had risen to 1,076.

    The figures were revealed after the BBC sent a freedom of information request to all the police forces in the UK.

    Anxiety, stress and depression are responsible for more than one in five sick days taken by hospital staff at one NHS trust in Yorkshire, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    A report by the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, which runs Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals, says almost 21% of sickness absence is due to mental health issues.

    The trust produced a recovery plan for sickness absence in 2016, which is regularly reviewed and updated.

    The union Unison says anxiety and depression are getting worse and more frequent within the NHS and blames the problem on cuts to the health service.

    The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust has been approached for comment.
