    A town in Ryedale is running a campaign to encourage more swifts to nest in the area.

    Volunteers from Helmsley Swifts, external have been placing nest boxes around the town to encourage the birds to stay and breed.

    The birds are currently flying back into North Yorkshire after wintering in Africa.

    A man from West Yorkshire has been arrested in connection with the illegal dumping of up to 25,000 tonnes of rubbish across the country.

    The 46-year-old from Hebden Bridge is being questioned over bales of waste found at 17 sites in the Midlands, North West and North East.

    The Environment Agency, external and the Yorkshire and HumberRegional Organised Crime Unit, external have been investigating the illegal dumping since 2016.

    The waste was left mainly in warehouses and of consists of large bales of rubbish.

    Police are still warning of delays after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge in Wakefield earlier today.

    No-one was injured in the crash on Doncaster Road.

    Long road delays were reported around the site of the crash this morning, with some motorists describing the tailbacks as "horrendous".

    West Yorkshire Police said people should continue to "expect delays" around the railway bridge.

    A £25m project to restore a Grade II listed cutlery works in Sheffield looks set to go ahead.

    Sheffield City Council says contracts have been exchanged for the Eye Witness Works on Milton Street.

    Developers, Capital and Centric, external, plan to build about 100 apartments and townhouses.

    The former cutlery works have been on the site since 1852.

    It was home to Taylor's Eye Witness Ltd, who produced pocket and kitchen knives, for 150 years.

    Planners say the 40ft chimney will stay.

    Detectives are urging drivers to check their car doors are locked after a spate of key jamming thefts in Rotherham.

    The devices allow criminals to block the signal of a car key fob, meaning unsuspecting drivers walk away leaving their car unlocked.

    There have been 26 reports of these thefts since February, officers said.

    A block of flats in Scarborough is being assessed by structural engineers after a car crashed into the wall of the building yesterday.

    Police have confirmed a shooting, which left a 29-year-old man with a serious leg injury, was a "targeted attack".

    Detectives are working to establish the details of the shooting, which took place on Chadwick Road in Sheffield at about 11:00 yesterday morning.

    The vice-chair of the Sheffield Tree Action Group, which protests against Sheffield Council's tree replacement programme, says it makes no difference to campaigners who the cabinet member in charge is.

    The Labour-run council announced earlier that Lewis Dagnall had been appointed to replace Bryan Lodge as Cabinet Member for Environment and Streetscene.

    Mr Lodge announced he had stood down after receiving "personal abuse".

    The tree replacement programme is part of Sheffield City Council's £2bn Streets Ahead project to remove "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory" trees and plant new ones.

    Campaigners claim many of the trees, classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory", are healthy specimens which should be saved.

    Officers looking into the illegal dumping of waste across 17 sites in England have detained a 46-year-old man.

    The agency says it's working with the police under Operation Cesium as it's looking into illegally dumped baled waste, weighing up to 25,000 tonnes.

    City of York Council leaders have demanded more information about the future of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the city's Guildhall, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The joint Conservative and Lib Dem executive committee has agreed to alterations to bring costs down, but has also pushed for more scrutiny before the project can go ahead.

    Council leader Ian Gillies said he wanted an updated business case, a risk analysis, and an outline of how a future contractor plans to support the local economy as it does the building work.

    Plans for the historic building include serviced offices, a restaurant and cafe.

    Police in Leeds have made a second arrest over the "unexplained" death of a man yesterday morning.

    A 32-year-old man was found seriously injured at a house on Harold Grove in Hyde Park at about 03:30 on Tuesday morning.

    Paramedics tried to treat the man, but he died at the scene.

    A 25-year-old man was arrested in the city in the early hours of this morning in connection with the death.

    A 39-year-old man who was arrested yesterday is still being questioned by detectives.

    A post-mortem examination has been carried out, but the man’s death is still being treated by police as unexplained.

    Joel Hodson is wanted by South Yorkshire Police in connection with a robbery which left a man with serious facial injuries.

    Officers say the 31-year-old, who is from the Westfield area of Sheffield, has links to Mosborough.
