    Firefighter tackling fireImage source, SYFR

The four day and night shift pattern could have seen some firefighters being on 96 hours of continuous duty, with nights spent in their stations waiting for calls.

The shifts were introduced to cut costs at four Barnsley stations and would have saved the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority £1.6m a year.

The Fire Brigades Union took the plans to High Court and Mr Justice Kerr decided they did breach EU working time regulations - as they did not guarantee sufficient breaks.

    Quote Message

The respite periods of one hour or more available after post-midnight callouts are not a complete break from the work environment. The employee is not able to stop work, go home, relax, forget about work or pursue his own interests."

Mr Justice Kerr, High Court judge
