    North Yorkshire Police takes homophobic hate crime very seriously but "doesn't get it right all of the time", the county's Police and Crime Commissioner has said.

    Julia Mulligan has responded following claims some victims are not reporting incidents because they're afraid they won't be taken seriously

    One of the directors of York Pride, Will Bosanquet, has said it's crucial people speak out if they've been targeted, but says some are still concerned they won't be taken seriously.

    North Yorkshire Police figures show the number of homophobic hate crimes being reported has been increasing over the last few years - 54 cases last year compared to 24 in 2012.

    New measures are being brought in at Leeds railway station to protect taxi drivers from attacks.

    British Transport Police officers will patrol taxi ranks outside the station and will hold meetings with drivers to discuss any issues as part of their new Taxi Watch scheme

    It's hoped attacks on drivers will reduce as a result and that more information will be provided on suspicious behaviour.

    The 50-year-old victim was close to a KFC store on City Road when he was attacked at about 13:45pm on Tuesday 8 May.

    PC Thomas Hollands says the road would have been "busy with pedestrians and traffic" at around the time of the assault and he urges anyone with information to get in touch.

    It provides specialist support services for women and girls affected by domestic violence.

    The organisation has run a high-profile campaign in a bid to keep open.

    The charity will now get £243,000 over three years from the Big Lottery Fund.

    Homophobic hate crime is going unreported in North Yorkshire, it's being claimed.

    That's the warning from Will Bosanquet, one of the directors of York Pride, who says it's "crucial people speak out" if they've been targeted.

    However, he adds that some people are "still concerned they won't be taken seriously".

    North Yorkshire Police figures show the number of homophobic hate crimes being reported in the county has been increasing over the last few years.

    There were 54 cases last year, compared to 24 in 2012.

    A bride-to-be says her wedding photos will be ruined by a huge advert across the front of the venue in Leeds.

    Sarah Dooley is due to marry fiance Andy at Leeds Town Hall - outside which couples traditionally pose for photos - at the weekend.

    But they were unaware they would be sharing the stage with the advert for next month's World Triathlon.

    Leeds City Council said the Town Hall was "important for promoting major events" and the banner would remain.

    The sandstone facade of the picturesque Victorian building is currently hidden behind the endurance event billboard.

    Fire crews from Barnsley, Cudworth and Tankersley stations responded to the incident on Coniston Road in Barnsley just before 21:00 last night.

    A woman was rescued from the property, but has since died.

    No one else is thought to have been in the property at the time.

    The pair deny conspiracy to murder over the alleged plot.

    They have each also pleaded not guilty to intentionally encouraging or assisting an offence and a charge of encouraging or assisting an offence believing it would be committed.

    The older boy denies aggravated burglary, as well as unlawfully wounding his former girlfriend.

    Yorkshire rail passengers face disruption as Northern staff stage a 24-hour strike, days after travel chaos when new timetables were introduced.

    RMT union members at Northern are striking in an ongoing dispute about safety involving driver-only operated trains.

    The union said the train operator had declared "war on passengers".

    Northern called for "meaningful" talks and said the majority of trains would run between 07:00 and 19:00.

    The firm faced widespread criticism over cancellations, delays and the implementation of a new timetable on Monday.

    Two women have been charged with murder over the death of another woman in Barnsley last weekend.

    The body of Claire Louise Smith, 42, who was from Barnsley, was found at about 06:50 on Saturday in Union Street.

    A post-mortem examination revealed she had died from injuries from a "very severe physical attack", police said.

    Penelope Brownlie, 45, and Justine Wainwright, 57, also known as Bridget O'Keefe, have both been charged with murder.

    The women, both of Britannia Close in the town, remain in police custody and are due to appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court later.

    A 71-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the investigation has been released on police bail, police say.
