    The Met Office has issued another weather warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible flooding in North Yorkshire.

    A warning's already in force for western parts of Yorkshire throughout today, saying there's a chance homes and businesses could be flooded quickly.

    Now a new warning's been issued, external for North Yorkshire between 06:00 and 20:00 Saturday.

    Paul Heckingbottom, who's just been sacked by Leeds United after just 16 games, took over from Dane Thomas Christiansen who was given the push in February after a disastrous start to 2018.

    Christiansen's departure came after the club was knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two Newport and failed to win any of their first five league games of the year.

    Heckingbottom was a surprise appointment given he had only extended his deal with Yorkshire rivals Barnsley the previous week and the Oakwell club said they were "shocked" by his departure.

    He could not arrest the club's slide down the table, however, winning just one of his first eight games.

    The campaign ended in controversy with a much-criticised post-season tour of Myanmar arranged by owner Andrea Radrizzani.

  3. Leeds United praises sacked Heckingbottom's 'passion'published at 12:43 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

    Leeds United's managing director Angus Kinnear has praised the "commitment and passion" of Paul Heckingbottom, who's been sacked from the club after less than four months in charge.

    In a statement on the club's website, external, Mr Kinnear says: "Paul came to us during a difficult period in the season and has conducted himself in an exemplary manner despite results not going as any of us had hoped."

    The club's objective now is to find a head coach "with more experience who can help us reach the goals we have talked about since we became custodians of the club last summer", according to Mr Kinnear.

    "We are confident of making a quick appointment and we thank our fans for their continued support," he adds.

    A third of local train services in West Yorkshire are running late this lunchtime.

    It comes as rail union the RMT calls for the transport secretary to resign over the chaos which followed the introduction of new rail timetables.

    Northern is still experiencing problems and has cancelled more than 100 services today.

  5. Hull college 'disappointed' by further strike actionpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

    Hull College says it's "disappointed" by the University and College Union's (UCU) decision to hold a further seven days worth of strikes.

    Hull College Group, which runs colleges in Hull, Goole and Harrogate, has started a restructuring plan to deal with a £10m deficit which could see 231 posts closed.

    The University and College Union plans to hold five days of strikes from Monday 18 June and another two days on 26 and 27 June.

    The college says it will do everything it can to avoid disruption to exams.

    More on the news that Leeds United have sacked head coach Paul Heckingbottom after less than four months in charge at Elland Road.

    The 40-year-old won just four of his 16 games at the helm, having left Barnsley to replace Thomas Christiansen on 6 February.

    Leeds ended the season 13th in the Championship table, 15 points outside the top six.

    His departure means Leeds could start the season with a new manager for a fifth successive year.

    Two prison governors in South Yorkshire have agreed to pay civilian investigators to tackle crime in prisons to help free up stretched police resources, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    More than 100 offences a month are reported to South Yorkshire Police from Doncaster's four prisons.

    The scale of problems surrounding the prisons, which include HMP Doncaster, which also has a young offenders institution, Moorland and Lindholme, is so great a new prison board has been created to allow police to work more closely with the prison authorities.

    Police have thanked three young girls for helping to bring a sex attacker from Bradford to justice.

    36 year-old Richard Halliday of Wrose Road in Shipley, has been jailed for 12 years and nine months at Bradford Crown Court.

    He had pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault,

    His victims were aged 11 and 12.

    Every child born in York over the next year is to have a tree planted to mark their arrival.

    It's a project being launched today by York Rotary Club and the City of York Council.

    It's expected that about 3,000 trees will be planted on land alongside the River Foss at York St John University's Haxby Road Sports Centre.

    Every parent registering the birth of their child through York Register Office will be offered the chance to get involved in the scheme.

    The trees planted in York are part of 47,000 Rotary UK aims to plant across the country over the next 12 months.

  16. Volunteers needed for York charity fighting to meet demandpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

    A charity in York says it's seen such a big increase in demand for its services it's desperate for more volunteers.

    Over the last year, Citizens Advice in the city helped over 4,000 people with things like benefits and debts.

    The charity's chief executive officer, Simon Toppham, says that in 2017 its 62 volunteers helped with about 12,000 problems.

    Mr Toppham says: "They give up their free time to help people in their community get back on their feet.

    "Volunteering Is a great way to meet people and learn skills," he added.

    It would be mew-sic to the ears of the owner of Barnsley cat Awol if he wins a national award.

    He's in the running to be named Cats Protection's, external National Cat of the Year 2018 which will be decided in August.

    His categeory at the awards is Most Caring Cat and the nomination is in recognition of how he helped owner Nicola Hamblett cope with a series of tragic losses.

    You might need a brolly at some point today as there is a warning of thunderstorms in the western half of Yorkshire, external.

    The Met Office says there's a small chance homes, external and businesses could be flooded quickly, "with possible damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds".

    The warning came into force at 09:00 and lasts until 22:00 tonight.

  19. Chuff me: Famous loco causes alarm at London stationpublished at 09:13 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

    The Doncaster-built Flying Scotsman proved too much for Victoria Station in London last night.

    The world famous record-breaking locomotive's arrival caused the evacuation of the station after steam from its boiler set off a fire alarm.

    Usually the alarm is deactivated during visits by steam engines, but a mix-up meant the sensors were triggered, prompting the alert.

    These days Scotsman, one of the world's most famous locomotives, is owned by the National Railway Museum in York and it recently underwent a £4.2m decade-long refit.

    In 1934, it was clocked at 100mph - officially the first locomotive to have reached that speed.

  20. Endeavour replica set for new homepublished at 08:56 British Summer Time 1 June 2018

    A replica of Captain Cook's ship, the Endeavour, is due to arrive at its new berth in Whitby later today having been moved from Stockton.

    The floating museum, built in 1993, is due at Whitby harbour after being sold to a partnership supported by the North York Moors National Park and given a refit.

    Cook sailed the original ship to Australia and New Zealand on his voyage of discovery in the 18th Century.
