    York's Mansion House is flying the flag of the city at half-mast as a mark of respect to Barry Dodd CBE, who has been killed in a helicopter crash.

    A helicopter piloted by Mr Dodd, the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, came down and caught fire in a field on Wednesday afternoon near Boroughbridge.

    Keith Orrell, the Lord Mayor of York, said his "sincerest thoughts and prayers" were with Mr Dodd's family.

    RSPCA officers have rescued a wild deer after he became wedged between metal railings in Sheffield.

    People in a nearby block of apartments in the Malin Bridge area spotted the deer and reported it to the charity.

    With the help of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue the animal was soon freed.

    RSPCA inspector Kristy Ludlam, who was called to the rescue, says: "First, the crew tried to stretch the metal bars but his hips were too wide.

    "So they had to cut the railings - and before we knew it, he was free and quickly ran off back into the woodland," she says.

    The Archbishop of York says he is "shocked and saddened" to hear of the death of Barry Dodd, the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, in a helicopter crash.

    The aircraft, being flown by Mr Dodd, came down and caught fire in a field on Wednesday afternoon near the town of Boroughbridge.

    Dr John Sentamu says Mr Dodd , who was a CBE, was "greatly admired and valued across the county, working tirelessly with businesses and charities to encourage them in their enterprises".

    "Our thoughts and prayers are with Barry's family at this time, especially his widow, Frances. May he rest in peace and rise in glory," he added.

    OK, so maybe the above sentences aren't strictly true, but Leeds City Council says it's just towed this boat away after it was left on the streets of Chapeltown.

    It was classed as an obstruction after having been left on Grange Avenue and officers had already left an "enforcement notice" on it.

    Leeds is an outsider in the race to become the new base for Channel 4, according to a bookmaker.

    It was announced yesterday that Leeds had made the a list of seven cities around the UK who could be home to the broadcaster.

    However, Coral only puts the Yorkshire city at 10/1 to be chosen, placing the bid from the West Midlands as favourite at 5-2.

    Leeds is also up against bids from Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff and Glasgow.

    The winning city will be announced in October.

    A cash reward of £250 is being offered to people who can help identify individuals responsible for graffiti in Barnsley.

    Rewards will be given to people if their help leads to a successful prosecution, the council said.

    The offer comes as The #Everybody Think campaign launches.

    It aims to tackle environmental crime and the council is sharing a digital gallery of different graffiti from across the area.

    Exhibits include graffiti and tags at a range of locations and will be displayed for the next few weeks on Barnsley Council’s Facebook page, external.

    Sir Gary Verity, the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said Mr Dodd had been a "wonderful man" and would be a "massive loss" to the whole of Yorkshire.

    York's Mansion House, the official residence of the city's Lord Mayor, said its flag would be flying at half mast in tribute to Mr Dodd.

    Detectives in Castleford say they're continuing to investigate an alleged assault on a 13-year-old boy in the town.

    The incident is said to have taken place on Sunday evening on Sagar Street.

    Officers say they are "very much aware" of how concerned people are about the incident and say they are treating it as a priority.

    They have urged people not to share pictures or video on social media as it could "undermine" their investigation.

    Sheffield City Region mayor Dan Jarvis has criticised train operator Northern and said using the service was like "going back in time", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The South Yorkshire metro mayor ripped into the company after new timetables and services resulted in a lack of drivers, cancelled services and furious commuters across South Yorkshire and further afield.

    Mr Jarvis, who commutes from Barnsley into Sheffield as mayor, said he has experienced the problems first-hand and said the service at present "should have been consigned to the past".

    He said: "I'm not the only one, but I'm incredibly concerned about the performance of Northern rail in recent times.

    "The existing service going to and from Sheffield and Barnsley, for example, it's just not good enough at the moment."

    Northern has been contacted for a comment.

  19. North Yorkshire helicopter crash: What we know nowpublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 31 May 2018

    In the last half hour, police have said they believe the pilot who died in yesterday's helicopter crash in North Yorkshire was the county's Lord Lieutenant, Barry Dodd.

    Emergency services were called out to reports of a helicopter crash in the Aldborough area, near Boroughbridge, yesterday afternoon. It was later revealed that one person had died.

    Police say Mr Dodd's family have been informed, and are being supported by specially trained officers.

    They've also requested his family's privacy is respected.

    Until earlier this year, Mr Dodd was also the Chair of the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership.

    In 2014, he was awarded a CBE for services to the UK economy.

    Investigations are continuing today into what happened and the Air Accident Investigation Branch, as well as police, are still at the scene.

    In a statement, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said Mr Dodd died at the scene.

    "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time," the spokesperson adds.

    Mr Dodd’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

    Officers remain at the scene, alongside the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, while investigations continue.
