  10. Tower changes 'too much for many' - English Heritagepublished at 07:20 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

Plans, which have just been scrapped, to build a visitor centre adjacent to 13th Century Clifford's Tower in York were "too much for many", English Heritage has admitted.

    Clifford's Tower

Objectors claimed building the centre into the base of the tower's mound would destroy the view and have a detrimental effect on the appearance of the area.

Despite their objections, the £2m centre was approved in 2016, with English Heritage saying the project would "enhance access to the site".

Now, the organisation has scrapped its plans saying it realised "many people have a deep emotional attachment towards the mound".

Andrea Selley, English Heritage’s Director for the North of England, said: "The visitor building would not have touched any of the medieval remains, but that small mound is a deeply familiar backdrop.

"The thought of changing it – even slightly and even with the very best intentions – was too much for many," she said.

  11. Clifford's tower 'toilet block' visitor centre scrappedpublished at 07:06 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

City of York Council approved English Heritage's £2m plans for the 13th Century tower site in October 2016.

But detractors said the planned centre looked like a "toilet block" and "the wrong building in the wrong place".

English Heritage says that since the plans were first given the go-ahead, "a lot has changed".

A new masterplan to regenerate the Castle Gateway area which has since been produced by City of York Council has "opened up possibilities that did not exist when English Heritage first developed its plans for Clifford's Tower", the heritage organisation says.

It's also "clear that many people love the shape of the mound and disliked the thought of its circumference being broken", a statement by English Heritage adds.
