    There are calls for the South Pennines to be recognised as a national park or as an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty.

    The stretch of land where Yorkshire meets Lancashire includes Ilkley, Otley, Bradford and Hebden Bridge.

    The regeneration agency, Pennine Prospect, says it's the only upland landscape in England which has not been given the highest level landscape designation.

    Pennine Prospect chair, Pam Warhurst, who's spearheading the campaign to put the area firmly on the map, says it's been considered as a landscape worthy of designation since the 1940s.

    "Its wild, peaty hilltops have proved an inspiration for the Brontes, Ted Hughes and Simon Armitage," she says.

    Katie Wickham, 15, has gone missing from her home in Cleckheaton and police are growing concerned.

    Katie was last seen in Turnsteads Avenue in Cleckheaton at about 22:30 on Monday, according to police.

    She is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, of slim build, with dyed red hair which she usually wears in a ponytail.

    She was last seen wearing a black Adidas top, black leggings and a nose ring.

    Officers say they're are "concerned for her welfare" and believe she is in the Batley and Spen area.

    They are appealing for anyone with information about Katie's whereabouts to contact them.

    A 31-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in Barnsley.

    The body of Jill Hibberd (pictured), 73, was found in the living room of a house in Roy Kilner Road, Wombwell, on 31 May.

    South Yorkshire Police said a woman was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. She has since been released under investigation.

    A 40-year-old man charged with murdering Miss Hibberd is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 9 July.

    Lee Trevor Fueloep, of Willow Garth, Wombwell, denies the offence.

    A 22-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder, burglary and theft has been released under investigation.

    The RNLI says it stands by its decision to stand down two of its lifeboat volunteers in Whitby after what's described as a "hardcore pornographic image of a fellow crew member" was put onto a mug.

    Two volunteers were suspended earlier this year after the RNLI launched an investigation into the "production of inappropriate material of a sexual nature".

    For the first time, the RNLI has given more details of what happened.

    In a statement, the organisation says one of the crewmen was stood down because another member of staff was targeted on social media without their knowledge.

    Graphic sexual images were also produced which "went far beyond banter", according to the RNLI.

    The other volunteer produced a "hardcore pornographic image" of a fellow crew member on a mug, the organisation adds.

    The charity says the actual image produced by the volunteer was so graphic no newspaper would be able to print it without breaking the law.

    The RNLI says it will continue to challenge any inappropriate behaviour by staff and volunteers.

  7. Man held over 'Punish a Muslim' letterspublished at 06:31 British Summer Time 13 June 2018

    A 35-year-old man has been arrested as part of a police investigation into letters calling for a day of violence against Muslims in the UK.

    The letters, which proposed specific forms of attack, have been circulated online and received in communities across England - including West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.

    The man, from Lincoln, was arrested on suspicion of soliciting to murder by police investigating the so-called "Punish a Muslim Day" letters.

    He is also being held on suspicion of sending a hoax noxious substance and threatening letters.

    The man is in custody at a police station in West Yorkshire.

    A man who tried to sell a "fragile" teenage girl for sex after forcing her to send him explicit images has been jailed.

    Adam Banks messaged the girl repeatedly on social media and arranged for her to meet four men before he was arrested in Leeds, Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

    The 33-year-old, of Wigan, admitted a range of sexual offences.

    He was jailed for two years and eight months on Monday.

    A decision on whether Scarborough houses up to 20 asylum seekers will be voted on by all 50 of the borough's councillors, it has been decided.

    Members of the council's cabinet agreed the plan should be debated at Scarborough's next full council meeting, rather than discuss it themselves.

    The Home Office is asking the town to become an asylum dispersal area, taking some of the 50 asylum seekers who could come to North Yorkshire over the next two years.

    Even if the council objects, the government can still move forward with the plans.

    A £750m regeneration scheme for Castleford has been approved by Wakefield Council, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    More than 4,000 homes, shops and leisure facilities will be developed in the north-east of the town.

    Developers Spawforths, who helped draw up the plans, said the aim was to "change perceptions" about the area.

    The plans will see acres of old industrial land brought back into use over the next two decades in an attempt to make the town a more attractive place to live.

    The overall scheme includes the redevelopment of the old Hickson-Welch chemical works and the closed Nestlé factory, which was given approval by Wakefield Council's planning committee last month.

    Sheffield Council wants to sell the land it owns at Skye Edge Avenue so 135 new homes can be built, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The site high above the city behind Midland Station and Norfolk Park has been vacant since 2009 when 1970s maisonettes were demolished.

    The local authority has been approached by Place First, who want to expand their private rented sector housing into Sheffield.

    The plans include 55 two-bedroom apartments, 45 three-bed townhouses and 35 four-bed houses for rent.

    Place First, external already have developments across the country, including Liverpool, Leeds and Hartlepool.

    It's hoped the development could be completed by the end of May 2019.

    Michael Eaton, 72, was attacked at his home in Balby, Doncaster, by Lindsey Fletcher, 38, on Christmas Day.

    Sheffield Crown Court heard Ms Fletcher had been sexually abused by Mr Eaton as a child and claims he was trying to do so again when she attacked him.

    Prosecutor Dafydd Enoch QC said Mr Eaton was dominated by Fletcher, a drug addict, and was the victim of her violent temper.

    Ms Fletcher, of St James's Street, Doncaster, denies murder but admits manslaughter.

    The case continues.
