    Pontefract's new leisure centre will cost £6m more than originally thought, Wakefield Council has been told.

    A report estimates the new total cost of the centre will be £20m.

    Wakefield Council plans to eventually close Knottingley Sports Centre, Castleford and Pontefract pools.

    They would be replaced by the Pontefract Park complex which will include a 10-lane swimming pool and sport facilities.

    A planning application will be submitted in July, if the council approves the additional funding.

    Technical work on the light and sound system is now under way.

    Europe's first-ever pop-up Elizabethan theatre is being built in the car park next to Clifford's Tower.

    The temporary structure will stage four of the Bard's plays through the summer - Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Richard III and Macbeth.

    The theatre has a capacity of 950 - with 600 seated on tiered balconies around an open-roofed courtyard which will have standing room for 350 "groundlings".

    Six people are in custody after a 28-year-old man suffered stab wounds in Mexborough last night.

    Emergency services were called to Dryden Road just after 10:30 after reports a man had been hurt, external.

    The man was injured in an altercation between a group of people.

    The victim was taken to hospital and is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

    Two 18-year-old men, three 17-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy have all been arrested on suspicion of wounding.

  6. Scarborough to decide fate of 50 asylum seekerspublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

    A meeting later could see Scarborough become the first local council which backs a government scheme to house 50 asylum seekers in North Yorkshire.

    If members of the council's cabinet agree to the plan, Scarborough will take up to 20 asylum seekers over two years.

    Senior councillors in Hambleton had a similar debate last week, but didn't make a decision, saying they "need more detail first".

    The government wants Scarborough to become an asylum seeker dispersal area.

    If councillors decide against the scheme the government can still force them to accept refugees.

  8. Yorkshire Sculpture Park recognised as 'one of finest'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

    The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Wakefield, has been named as one of the top 10 places which tell the history of England's art and architecture.

    The park has been selected by Historic England from hundreds of public nominations.

    The site was founded in 1977 by Peter Murray and has been expanded from 10 to 500 acres in size.

    It started with a £1,000 grant from Yorkshire Arts, but now attracts more than 500,000 visitors each year.

    The park includes work by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Joan Miro, Ai Weiwei, Tony Cragg, Andy Goldsworthy and Antony Gormley.

    Praised for its use of the English countryside, the judges said: "It is, without doubt, one of the finest examples of art in the landscape anywhere in the world."

    There's been a big drop in unemployment in Yorkshire.

    Latest figures show the number of people out of work in the region fell by 16,000 between February and April to a 120,000.

    Nationally, unemployment fell by 38,000 to 1.4 million.

    The cancellation of a popular motorcycle meeting at Oliver's Mount in Scarborough will hit the town's tourist trade, it's being claimed.

    Shirley Smith, president of the Scarborough Hospitality Association, says the scrapping of the famous Cock O' The North bike race - England’s only natural road race track - means several of the town's hotels have been hit by cancellations.

    The race was meant to go ahead later this month, but was called off as the track doesn't meet strict new safety rules.

    The family of a Bradford baby who had her limbs amputated because of meningitis say they're receiving little support from the NHS over their daughter's mobility.

    Kia Gott returned home for good this week after spending nine months in hospital.

    Her family say they're practically house-bound because Kia's specialist buggy isn't ready.

    Action is being taken to deal with the number of people taking the drug known as "Spice" on Barnsley's streets.

    The psychoactive substances, formerly known as "legal highs", mimic the effects of cannabis and were banned by the government in May 2016.

    Barnsley Council says there's been a rise in people taking Spice, which can leave users in a semi-conscious state.

    Civil injunctions are now being used to ban drug-takers from certain areas.

    Passengers affected by delays and cancellations on Northern rail services will be offered cash compensation of up to a month's travel.

    An inquiry has been ordered by the government into what's been described as "unacceptable disruption" following the introduction of new timetables three weeks ago.

    Northern has cancelled 165 daily train services until the end of July.

    What would you like to see happen to South Yorkshire's famous Wentworth Woodhouse stately home?

    A public consultation into the future of the landmark house is being launched, with the aim of resurrecting the mansion, its stable block and the riding school.

    A team representing trustees and staff has been looking into the grand plan over the last six months and they now want to hear from other people.

    The house, which has more than 200 rooms, was built between 1725 and 1750 and its facade is more than 600ft long.

    Recently, graffiti and handprints from craftsmen dating back more than 200 years were uncovered during renovation work at the house.

    Public consultation evenings are being staged at Wentworth's Rockingham Arms today and Thursday.

    Government plans to sell off railway arches are being criticised by businesses in Leeds.

    Network Rail says the proposed sale of more than 5,000 arches across the country could raise more than £1bn and would not affect existing tenancies.

    But many business owners in Leeds are worried about what it could mean for the future and are heading to Parliament to try to get MPs' support.
