    Lizzie Jones is to become the first singer to perform in the main ring at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate next month, organisers have announced.

    The soprano, from Halifax, will be accompanied by The Band of the Royal Armoured Corps.

    She has performed throughout the UK and at many rugby league matches, including singing Abide with Me at the Challenge Cup final at Wembley in 2015.

    Lizzie also recently sang to a sell-out crowd at Elland Road before England's football friendly with Costa Rica.

    She also campaigns for all athletes to have heart screening.

    Lizzie’s husband, Welsh international rugby league player, Danny Jones died aged 29 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match in May 2015.

    The Great Yorkshire Show opens on 10 July.

    Bradford is to mark the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the first Windrush immigrants with a festival later this month, says the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    June marks the anniversary of the ship Empire Windrush arriving in London in 1948, bringing the first wave of post-war West Indian immigrants from Jamaica.

    Some of the passengers came north to settle and help rebuild cities devastated by World War Two bombing raids.

    The celebrations will include a civic reception in Bradford City Hall, there will also a festival of music in City Park with Caribbean food and a fun fair.

    The civic reception will be on Friday 22 June and will be hosted by the city's Lord Mayor.

    A 97-year-old man has suffered a head injury after being robbed in the Woodlands area of Doncaster this morning.

    At about 10.30 the victim was approached by a man asking if he wanted to buy a garden strimmer, he agreed and went to hand over the cash when he was pushed to the ground and the money snatched.

    The robber then made off in the direction of Highfields Lake.

    The man is described as white, aged between 26 and 29, of a medium build and has short dark hair.

    There was is a public consultation into the renovation of the Grade I listed property at the Rockingham Arms.

    Last year a preservation trust bought the building and its masterplan is now up for discussion, external.

    The plans include four main things - a visitor experience, offices, residential parts, and event spaces.

    The UK government ruled out an inquiry into the "Battle of Orgreave" clashes at a coking plant in South Yorkshire in 1984 - something Scotland's Justice Secretary Michael Matheson told MSPs was the "wrong decision" and which had convinced him that a "do nothing approach" was not the way forward.

    The review in Scotland will involve a study of files held at the National Records of Scotland and the National Archives in London, as well as gathering evidence from those directly involved.

    The Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire is to take over the running of the county's fire service, the home secretary has confirmed.

    The Home Office approved Julia Mulligan's proposals to run both services in a written statement given to Parliament earlier today.

    North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council opposed the plan but the Home Secretary Sajid Javid disagrees with them.

    He said approving the proposal will lead to greater efficiency and wouldn't damage public safety.

    Julia Mulligan has argued the move will save £6.6m over the next decade.

    Fiona Mozley, York's Man Booker Prize-nominated author, is among the writers shortlisted for another prestigious writing prize.

    Her debut novel, Elmet, will compete against works by other writers under the age of 35 in the Somerset Maugham Award category of the Society of Authors' Awards.

    Some of today’s most prominent literary figures, such as Zadie Smith and Seamus Heaney, have previously won the award.

    The Society of Authors' Awards will see the UK’s biggest literary fund of more than £98,000 given to established and emerging writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

    As well as being nominated for these awards, Fiona Mozley's first novel has also previously been nominated for this year's Women's Prize for Fiction.

    Police officers in Castleford are looking for a man in his 80s with dementia who's gone missing in the town.

    The police do not have a picture of the man, who's called Geoff, but he's described as white, about 5ft 6ins tall and wearing glasses.

    He was last seen just before noon wearing a beige baseball cap and is in his slippers and has trouble walking, police say.

    Anyone who sees him is asked to contact the force.

    The leader of Leeds City Council has called on train operator Northern to put "the needs of passengers first" after recent disruption on the rails.

    Judith Blake, who is the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's representative on the Transport for the North Partnership Board, is leading a review into the problems experienced by passengers over the past few weeks.

    Ms Blake said the review would "set out far-reaching recommendations to ensure this situation is not repeated".

    She also said board members wanted to secure "comprehensive compensation" for passengers across the north of England.

    Northern has apologised for the disruption and said it was the result of a timetable change on 20 May.

    Doncaster Council's chief finance officer says the authority is doing a "pretty good job" despite it overspending by £2.5m, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Steve Mawson was reacting to the council's quarterly report, which lays out the state of the council's finances.

    He said despite the overspend, he was "quite positive" going forward.

    "We've got less resources to manage, but we're doing a pretty good job," he said.

    "We have a budget of £500m - and an overspend of £2.5 million isn't too bad."

    Plans for a new £37m mental health hospital in York have been formally approved.

    It means work can begin on the site, off Haxby Road, in the next few months, with it due to open in early 2020.

    The 72-bed hospital will provide two adult, single sex wards and two older people’s wards, one for people with dementia and another for people with mental health conditions such as psychosis, severe depression or anxiety.

    There have been plans for a new mental health hospital in the city since Bootham Park Hospital (pictured) was suddenly closed in 2015 after inspectors found it not fit for purpose.
