    North Yorkshire Police have made a fresh appeal to trace vandals who damaged one of the rock formations at Brimham Rocks near Harrogate.

    The boulder was destroyed after being pushed off a ledge at the well-known beauty spot.

    Police said the vandals had put themselves and visitors at risk.

    The rocks were formed about three hundred and twenty million years ago, when water, grit, and sand washed down from Scotland and Norway to form the landscape of Yorkshire:

    Detectives have launched an investigation after cash was stolen during a robbery at a travel agents in Sheffield.

    Officers were called to Thomas Cook on Middlewood Road, at 12:30 on Monday, after staff reported two people had gone into the store and one was carrying a machete.

    The offenders, who both had their faces covered, threatened staff before leaving with a quantity of cash from the till.

    They left in a white car heading towards Malin Bridge along Taplin Road.

    No-one was injured in the incident, however staff members were left incredibly shaken and distressed.

    A gambling addict from Halifax who stole his grandmother's life savings of over £400,000 to fund his habit has been jailed for 28 months.

    Darren Gledhill, 30, plundered his elderly gran's life savings over three years, leaving her three children with no inheritance following her death.

    Bradford Crown Court heard he began stealing from Sandra Gledhill after he set up an online bank account for her.

    The offence came to light when the care home where his grandmother was living realised she was more than £40,000 in arrears.

    Gledhill, of Hebble Gardens, Halifax, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft.

    Senior councillors in Scarborough have backed proposals designed to stop car cruiser events being held in the town.

    They want to introduce a public space protection order which would prevent people gathering without proper approval from the council.

    The meetings often see hundreds of cars descend on parts of the town.

    Police were forced to close several roads in the town to protect pedestrians from dangerous drivers in March.

    The move must now be agreed by a meeting of the full authority.

    Detectives are asking witnesses to come forward after shots were fired, external at a house in the Rossington area of Doncaster at the weekend.

    Police received reports of shots being fired on Central Drive on Sunday at about 22:40.

    An Audi A4 was damaged as was a downstairs window at a property on the street.

    Police are trying to locate a car seen leaving the area shortly afterwards.

    He is the third player to join managerless Bantams this summer after full-back Joe Riley and midfielder Josh Wright.

    Painting by 17th century Dutch Masters, including Rembrandt, are to go on show at the Cannon Hall Museum, external in Barnsley.

    The exhibition, which opens this Saturday, features two significant pieces from the National Gallery - An Elderly Man as Saint Paul by Rembrandt and Skittle Players outside an Inn by Jan Steen.

    It also includes Portrait of a Girl by a follower of Michiel Jansz van Miereveld and Fruit and Lobster by Jacob Marrel.

    The exhibition was made possible with a grant from the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund, external.

  14. Teenager sexually assaulted in York supermarketpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

    Police have just released details of a serious sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl which took place in a supermarket toilet in York earlier this year.

    The attack took place in March in the disabled toilet at the Tesco Extra store on Clifton Moor, but was was not reported at the time.

    West Yorkshire Police are looking into this as part of a wider investigation.

    Officers say the victim was visibly distraught following the attack and was spoken to at the time by an elderly couple.

    PC Simon Kingdon says: "We appreciate the information we have is vague, but are hopeful this will have stuck in someone’s memory.

    “We're interested in speaking to the elderly couple who approached the victim and anyone else who recalls seeing a distraught white teenage girl in company with an older white teenage boy in the store in March."

    Yorkshire Water is calling on companies which make wet wipes to do more to encourage customers to throw them in the bin - not the toilet.

    More than 30,000 sewer blockages are dealt with every year, costing £2.4m, the company says.

    Although labelled as flushable, wipes which contain plastic do not break down in the sewers like toilet paper.

    That means they can cause pipes to block and waste water to come back up through toilets and sinks.

    Yorkshire Water is raising awareness in Wakefield today and asking people to "stop flushing" wipes.

    There are plans to create a permanent memorial for Sheffield boxing legend Brendan Ingle MBE who died last month from a brain haemorrhage.

    Leading figures from the worlds of politics and boxing have come together, with the backing of his family, to plan a statue or similar memorial in the city.

    Former cruiserweight world champion Johnny Nelson, who Ingle trained, is one of those who wants a lasting tribute.

    More details have emerged of a major housing development on former chocolate factory land in York, including a long-discussed new bus link, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The new road between Haxby and Wigginton Roads in the city, running through the old Rowntree factory site, will only be open to buses, bikes and pedestrians.

    This former chocolate factory (pictured above) was built between 1909 and 1938.

    The housing plans include 118 three and four bedroom houses and 307 one, two and three-bed apartments, as well as a convenience store, a creche and new outside space.

    The plans also show many of the blocks will include underground car parks and will include a new central square with a children's play area and a "Railway Halt Square" where the new development meets the Sustrans cycle route.

    Northern Power Grid says it's aware of an unplanned power cut, external in parts of Sheffield.

    The company says it is hoping to have power restored by about 13:00.

    Around 360 premises in the S1 and S2 areas appear to have been affected.

    The firm says it was caused by an unexpected problem with an electricity cable in the area.

    The outage has forced the Showroom Cinema to close for a number of planned screening this lunchtime.
