Samples taken from 11 sites on the Foss and Ouse revealed a range of drug compounds, including antidepressants, antibiotics and epilepsy medicines.

Some drugs which cannot be prescribed in the UK were also found.

Previous lab-based studies have revealed environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals, including altering the behaviour and reproduction of fish.

The University of York team behind the research said drugs excreted in urine and faeces could pass through waste water treatment plants without being completely removed and then pumped into rivers.

  2. Poundworld founder could rescue firm from administrationpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

The founder of Wakefield-based Poundworld has said he is considering buying back some of the discount retailer's stores after it fell into administration on Monday.

    Christopher Edwards

Christopher Edwards, 67, who sold the business in 2015 for £150m to TPG Capital, said the chain could be saved with fresh management.

But he said no deal had been finalised and the discounter, which has its HQ in Normanton, would only survive another two weeks without a buyer, putting some 5,100 jobs at risk.

Mr Edwards, who started out running a market stall in Wakefield in 1974, said the management at Poundworld had "not adjusted" to rising cost pressures, caused by the weaker pound, and had "lost their profit margin".

He also said a decision to introduce multi-price products after 20 years of only selling goods for a pound had confused shoppers.

  6. Sowerby Bridge incinerator plan rejectedpublished at 07:16 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

Plans for a new waste incinerator in Sowerby Bridge have been blocked by councillors.

    Skip hire

Calder Valley Skip Hire had applied for a permit to operate the facility in Sowerby Bridge.

Campaigners had raised concerns about health risks from incinerator emissions but, despite objections, the plan was expected to be given the go-ahead last night.

However, Calderdale Council leader Tim Swift took the unusual step of blocking a permit on environmental grounds.

Councllor Swift said: "There are issues about air quality within the Sowerby Bridge area, particularly things like the nitrogen oxides produced by diesel and incinerators."

He added it was an "unusual and complicated application" and cited a conflict in having two different permits for the site - one for the small incinerator and another one provided by the Environment Agency, covering all the activities on the site.
