  1. 'Immediate details' sought over fire service takeoverpublished at 07:38 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

Details of how the takeover of North Yorkshire's Fire Service by the county's Police and Crime Commisioner (PCC) will work should be made clear as soon as possible, a councillor says.

    Emergency services

Yesterday, the Home Office approved PCC Julia Mulligan's proposals to run both services.

North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council had both opposed the plan, but Home Secretary Sajid Javid said it would lead to greater efficiency.

North Yorkshire Lib Dem councillor Ashley Mason says he is "disappointed" the plan has been approved.

"This is an issue many of us locally, from all political parties, have worked hard to prevent," he says.

"The government and the PCC should provide immediate details on how the proposed takeover is intended to work - with a full risk analysis included."

Ms Mulligan has argued the move will save £6.6m over the next decade.

Cases of "revenge porn" have almost doubled in Yorkshire over the last three years.

    Shocked woman

This is when someone posts intimate and videos online, usually after a break-up.

But across the country more than a third of such complaints are withdrawn, with charities saying this is largely because victims aren't given anonymity as it's not classified as a sexual offence.

North Yorkshire Police has recorded 84 cases since it became a crime in 2015 - with the youngest victim being just 12-years-old. Only 13 of those cases led to charges.

In South Yorkshire last year, there were 120 reports, but of those just six people were prosecuted.

Meanwhile, fewer than one in 10 cases have resulted in a charge in West Yorkshire.

Despite spending £7.4m less than it had budgeted for last year, the council said "complacency was not on the agenda".

It still faces having to cut its annual budget by up to £15m and financial costs, especially in adult and social care, are rising.

Deputy leader, Councillor Gareth Dadd, told a meeting of the authority's executive the underspend should be treated with "extreme caution" as £4.5m of it was a one-off windfall the council had not budgeted for.

Mr Dadd said the Conservative-run council faced "a headache" funding health and adult services in the coming year, adding: "We are doing our best to grapple with those financial challenges".

It was up to the government to provide "a robust, sustainable solution to this national problem", he said.
