  2. Watch: Former world champion arrives ahead of Ingle funeralpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Former Sheffield boxing world champion Johnny Nelson has arrived at the Cutlers Hall ahead of the funeral of his trainer Brendan Ingle.

    The service is due to begin at 13:30 at Sheffield Cathedral.

    A private service will take place at the City Road Crematorium after the funeral.

    A crowdfunding campaign has also been set up to create a permanent memorial in Sheffield for Brendan Ingle:

    The dates for a planned strike by bin collectors in Kirklees have been announced by the union involved.

    Unison, the union, say industrial action will take place between 2 and 8 July.

    The strike dates come after last-ditch talks between the council and union broke down, with each side blaming the other.

    Unison says Kirklees Council's 70 waste staff are owed a total of 23 years' leave and claim "bullying" by managers.

    The authority said it would not "tolerate bullying or harassment" and took any allegations "very seriously".

    A £6.5m landslip project to repair damage caused by the Boxing Day floods in 2015 has been finished in Mytholmroyd, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external.

    Work to strengthen the hillside, improve drainage and help protect against future flooding has finished at Scout Road.

    The 2015 floods caused a landslip that blocked the road and meant Scout Road Academy had to be moved and people had to leave about 20 homes for safety reasons

    Students went back to the academy in October 2016.

    The funeral of legendary Sheffield boxing trainer Brendan Ingle will take place later today following his death from a brain haemorrhage last month.

    The Dublin-born former boxer guided four fighters to world titles from his Sheffield gym - Johnny Nelson, Naseem Hamed, Junior Witter and Kell Brook.

    His funeral cortege is expected to set off from his gym in Wincobank at about 13:00 and the service will take place at Sheffield Cathedral.

    Ahead of that, I've been talking to the Reverend Canon Keith Farrow who will be reading a sermon.

    Police in North Yorkshire say a higher number of people stopped for breath tests are giving "increasingly high readings."

    The warning comes as the North Yorkshire force begins its annual summer drink and drug drive campaign.

    Drivers who've drunk any alcohol are being urged to think about the consequences before getting behind the wheel.

    North Yorkshire Police say they'll be out in force, to coincide with the World Cup, carrying out hundreds of breath tests.

    The media have arrived in Sheffield ahead of the funeral of boxing trainer Brendan Ingle this afternoon.

    Mr Ingle died last month at the age of 77.

    Hundreds of people are expected to attend the service at 13:30.

    The funeral will begin with the hymn All Things Bright And Beautiful.

    There'll also be a Communication of Condolence from the President of Ireland, Michael Higgins.

    An 87-year-old veteran who raised over £120,000 for The Royal British Legion when his sponsored walk began trending on social media is being given a prestigious award at Downing Street today.

    Jeffrey Long, a former paratrooper from Bingley, is being presented with a Times Sternberg Active Life Award, which recognises the dedication of those over 70 in their work for good causes.

    He made national headlines during last year’s poppy appeal when news of his 86-mile fundraising walk was shared by comedian Jason Manford (pictured below).

    Jeffrey aimed to raise £1,000 for The Royal British Legion, but smashed his target in one afternoon thanks to the tweet.

    His charity walk was picked up by the comedian after a chance meeting on a train with a woman, Paula Modeste, who shared Jeffrey Long's story on Facebook.

    In a personal letter to Jeffrey, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “The story of your fundraising for The Royal British Legion has inspired millions of people."

    The final masterplan for the largest regeneration York has ever seen is due to go before senior councillors next week.

    The plan examines how to develop a large area of land behind the city's railway station.

    It includes 2,500 homes, more than 2,000 parking spaces, 120,000 sq m of new office space and nearly 17 acres of park land and public space.

    I've been talking to Sheffield boxer Johnny Nelson ahead of the funeral of boxing trainer Brendan Ingle which is due to take place at Sheffield Cathedral this afternoon.

    Ingle presided over generations of promising boxing talent at his gym in Wincobank, including Nelson.

    He tells me that Ingle had a great way of dealing with the youngsters he came across and he told me this story about a spate of thefts at the gym:

    A protest's due to be held outside Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield later, after staff voted in favour of strike action in response to plans to remove them from the NHS payroll, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Workers at Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust, which runs Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals, are set to take action next month.

    The trust wants to transfer the contracts of cleaners, canteen staff, IT staff and maintenance workers to a separate company.

    Unions said it would create a "two-tier workforce" and called it an "insult".

    The plan would mean they would lose NHS terms and conditions and their contracts could be sold to a private firm.

  16. Students evacuated in Sheffield flats firepublished at 08:58 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    An investigation's continuing this morning after up to 100 students had to be evacuated from flats, external in Sheffield due to a fire.

    The blaze started yesterday in a plant room at the flats on Sharman Court, Broad Lane.

    Six fire engines were initially sent to the incident and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the blaze using hose reels.

  17. Laugher to lead GB dive team at Euro Championshipspublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Yorkshire's diving champ and Olympic Gold medallist Jack Laugher will lead Great Britain's team for this summer's European Championships in Scotland, it's been announced.

    The 23-year-old synchronised 3m springboard champion is originally from Ripon and he trains in Leeds.

    Laugher picked up three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year and won a bronze in last week's 3m World Cup event in China.

    He says: "The pool in Edinburgh has some great memories for me as it is where I won my first Commonwealth title. It will be great to return and face a new challenge."

    The diving competition takes place in August in Edinburgh as part of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.

    A date is due to be announced later for a strike by bin collectors in Kirklees.

    It's after last-ditch talks between the council and Unison broke down, with each side blaming the other.

    Unison says Kirklees Council's 70 waste staff are owed a total of 23 years' leave and claim "bullying" by managers.

    The authority said it would not "tolerate bullying or harassment" and took any allegations "very seriously".

    Following yesterday's talks, Unison accused Kirklees Council of going back on a number of issues agreed earlier, while the council accused Unison of walking out of the discussions.

  19. More time to question man over 'Punish a Muslim' letterspublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Counter Terrorism Police have been given another 36 hours to question a 35-year-old man in relation to letters calling for a day of violence against Muslims in the UK.

    The man, from Lincoln, was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of soliciting to murder by police investigating the so-called "Punish a Muslim Day" letters.

    He's also being held on suspicion of sending a hoax noxious substance and threatening letters.

    The man is in custody at a police station in West Yorkshire.

    The letters, which proposed specific forms of attack, were circulated online and received in communities across England - including in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.

    Hundreds of people are expected to attend the funeral of boxing trainer Brendan Ingle in Sheffield later.

    He died last month after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

    Ingle came to the city from Ireland as a teenager and steered many young fighters to the top levels of boxing, including Herol Graham, Naseem Hamed, Kell Brook and Johnny Nelson.

    His funeral cortege is expected to set off from his gym in Wincobank at about 13:00 and the service will take place at Sheffield Cathedral.

    Former Sheffield MP and ex-Sports Minister Richard Caborn said: "He's a legend, an institution in Sheffield. Young people respected him and he respected young people."
