    Colne Valley Labour MP Thelma Walker is backing a new study into the idea of reviving standing zones at Premier League and Championship football grounds.

    Speaking in the Commons, the Huddersfield Town fan said she, like many Terriers supporters, wanted the creation of so-called "safe standing" zones.

    The move comes almost 30 years since all-seater stadia were introduced after the Hillsborough disaster.

    Sports Minister Tracey Crouch told MPs that independent research would now be carried out.

    Posters showing a "prolific" shoplifter who is due to be released from prison today have been sent to businesses in a North Yorkshire town.

    Lee John McDonald, 35, was jailed last December after pleading guilty to a series of thefts from shops in Selby.

    North Yorkshire Police say he has a "brazen attitude" which sees him take whatever he wants without payment.

    The posters were released as part of a criminal behaviour order which prevents him from entering at least 17 shops in the town.

    A painting of an East Yorkshire scene by world famous Bradford artist David Hockney is expected to fetch up to £15m at auction.

    Double East Yorkshire is one of just two of his Yorkshire landscapes which are privately owned.

    Hockney created the 4m-wide wide painting of the Wolds from memory in 1998 when he returned to his home in California.

    It is due to go up for auction by Sotheby's this evening.

    Last month another painting by Hockney sold for £21.1m.

  4. Leeds store ram-raided for second time in six monthspublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    A clothing store in Leeds city centre has been targeted by ram-raiders for the second time in just over six months.

    Police say a Ford Transit van smashed through the front window of the Flannels store, on Vicar Lane, just before 23:00 last night.

    The van was accompanied by a black Audi estate, with thieves subsequently jumping out and entering the shop.

    They are thought to have stolen clothing, loading it into the Audi before speeding away from the scene.

    Police are now investigating and are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch with them.

  5. New recycling bins tested in 'Leeds by Example' schemepublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    Leeds is to get new bins in an attempt to get more people in the city recycling food and drink packaging.

    The bins will be placed in the city centre as part of a six-month trial beginning in September.

    Gavin Ellis, from recycling charity Hubbub, is behind the campaign which called Leeds by Example.

    He said the bins will target packaging from food and drink "which we consume while we're on the go".

    If the new scheme is successful it could be rolled out to other parts of West Yorkshire.

    A murder investigation has been launched after a man was found dead in a house in Sheffield this morning.

    Police were called to the house, on Steven Close, in Chapeltown, at about 00:30.

    A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be questioned by officers later today, police say.

    Meanwhile, officers are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.

    Yorkshire's cities should swap shops for offices and flats to help them thrive in the future, according to a new report.

    Figures show Bradford (picture) has one of the highest rates of empty shops in the country with almost a quarter vacant, with claims it simply has too many shops.

    While Sheffield has been described a the fifth worst place in the country for vacant city centre shops.

    The report was written by Anthony Breach, from the think-tank Centre for Cities, who says cities must adapt.

    Mr Breach said: "In some cases where there are lots of vacancies, that means perhaps removing some shops and replacing them with residential housing or office space - or even improving the public realm with parkland.

    "It also means attracting in new high-skilled, high-paying businesses to support the existing high street."

    The former chancellor of the University of Leeds, TV and radio presenter Melvyn Bragg, has launched a damning attack on the state of the UK's higher education system.

    In an interview with the Radio Times, Lord Bragg, who was the chancellor at Leeds from 1999 until 2017, says what he calls the "best university system in the world" is being "slowly destroyed, carelessly and utterly stupidly".

    Lord Bragg, who presents the Radio 4 discussion series In Our Time, says: "We used to be the clever country and now we're clearly the stupid country. Except for certain highlights."

    Drivers who damage fields by driving off-road can expect to be dealt with "robustly", according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has received a prestigious "innovation award" after using state-of-the-art techniques, including drones, to restore bogs.

    The trust's work has been recognised by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management after re-introducing essential peat-forming sphagnum moss across Yorkshire.

    The organisation say it is "pioneering" the use of drones, as well as satellites, to monitor the health of peatlands.

  12. New team to deal with shared bikes vandalism in Sheffieldpublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    A new rapid response team has been launched to deal with vandalism to Sheffield's fleet of shared bicycles.

    Ofo, which is behind the cycle-sharing scheme, say it's been "surprised" by the level of vandalism, with police refusing to collect dumped and damaged bikes.

    It's now introduced a 24-hour hotline to deal with reports of vandalism and says a team will work around the clock to collect bikes.

    Sheffield launched the bike-sharing scheme on 9 January with 500 bikes.

    A phone app unlocks the bikes so they can be ridden at 50p per half-hour, and then parked anywhere in the Sheffield zone for the next person to use:

    Two dogs have been rescued by officers from a car at York Hospital after they were left for over half an hour in the "blazing hot sun", say police.

    Officers who had to enter the car after smashing the car's windows to get to the dogs were struggling to breathe, so "goodness knows what these poor animals were going through", say police.

    Business leaders in Harrogate are calling for an investigation into a prestigious international cycling race which is due to take place in 2019.

    Council leader Richard Cooper said next year's UCI Road World Championships would shine a spotlight on Harrogate and bring lots of money into the town.

    But Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce says the event "could have serious ramifications for businesses already struggling for survival".

    All of the races will finish in Harrogate but there are concerns the crowds will not be as large as at the Tour de Yorkshire (pictured) and road closures could lead to a loss of customers.

  19. Sheffield tree protesters receive injunction warningspublished at 06:46 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    Sheffield City Council has written to tree protesters asking them to agree to the conditions of an injunction or face being taken to court for legal costs.

    The injunction, which prevents campaigners entering safety zones around trees, is due to expire next month and the council wants to extend it by another three years.

    The cabinet member responsible for the programme of tree-felling, Lewis Dagnall, says the ongoing legal process is about allowing workers to do their jobs safely.

    The council, which is planting new trees after removing existing ones, insists the trees earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

    However, many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which campaigners say should be saved.

    Instead, they say amendments should be made to surrounding pavements and roads.
