    Every year homeowners in the HU5 area of Hull open their back gardens for one of the biggest urban open garden events in the country.

    The Avenues Open Gardens in July attracts hundreds of visitors and raises lots of money for local charities.

    This year the event's raised a total of £14,100 and organisers have now presented Dove House Hospice, external with a check for £11,500 of that.

    Details of where the rest of the funds went are expected to be announced soon.

    Police in North Yorkshire are warning motorists to take care on rural roads after a tractor had to swerve to avoid a car, detaching the plough it was carrying and blocking the A169.

    It happened near Wykeham at 16:10 yesterday and luckily no-one was injured, but the road was blocked for about half an hour.

    There are about 6,000 miles of rural roads in North Yorkshire and officers say drivers should drive "safely and patiently" on those roads.

    Mike Niles gave up a "high-flying" marketing career in London to move back to his home town of Doncaster and set up a charity tackling loneliness among old people.

    It was founded by Mike Niles, who told BBC Three he broke down when he heard about MP Jo Cox's murder and after feeling increasingly lonely in London.

    "I was feeling increasingly unsettled and I guess the tragedy of that day jolted my perspective. I remember thinking: 'There’s a reason I’m feeling like this; maybe I’m not happy here'," Mr Niles said.

    That weekend he went to see his family in Doncaster, and on Monday morning, quit his job.

    "Recently, a woman in her 80s told me I’d saved her life. It was the same woman who, when I first met her, had cried to me for two hours saying she’d never felt so lonely," he said.

    "Fast forward a year to July 2018, and Cath was laughing and dancing at a Bollywood-themed party I’d organised. It felt a world away from my former high-flying career in London – but it's a moment that'll probably stay with me forever."

    A former martial arts academy will be demolished and replaced with a block of flats despite over 100 complaints from local residents, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external.

    The four-storey block on the site of the Sheffield Dragons College Of Martial Arts, in Market Place, Woodhouse, will be replaced with 27 apartments plus a shop, car parking and cycle storage.

    About 120 residents signed a petition objecting, with residents saying the building would be out of scale and look out of place with neighbouring listed buildings.

    Planning officers said the development would remove an unattractive building while fitting in with nearby listed properties.

    Fatal car crashes in West Yorkshire have almost doubled in a year, according to figures released by police.

    From the start of the year until 30 June there were 47 fatalities on West Yorkshire's roads compared to 27 for the same period last year.

    Now, the West Yorkshire force is asking drivers to think about how they are driving and whether or not they should be behind the wheel.

    A North Yorkshire historic ruin which dates back to the 12th Century has been damaged by graffiti.

    Easby Abbey, which is not far from Leeming Bar, was targeted by vandals some time last month.

    Repairs are likely to cost several hundreds of pounds.

    Samantha Duckworth was last seen at the Interchange in the city at about 12:00 yesterday.

    Police think the 36-year-old may have boarded a train to Blackpool.

    She was wearing dark tracksuit bottoms, black boots, light trainers, a dark t-shirt and a dark navy hooded top.

    The BBC has decided it will not challenge a ruling over its coverage of a South Yorkshire Police raid at Sir Cliff Richard's home in 2014 at the Court of Appeal.

    A High Court judge ruled the BBC had infringed the singer's privacy, awarding him £210,000 in damages in July, and refused leave to appeal.

    The corporation will now seek advice from the attorney general over how the ruling impacts future reporting.

    Sir Cliff was never arrested or charged during the police investigation.

    It followed an allegation made by a man who claimed he was sexually assaulted by Sir Cliff at an event at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane in 1985, when he was a child.

    Planners in Barnsley are being urged to approve proposals for a new footbridge to replace a level crossing, regarded as one of the most dangerous in the country.

    Jumble Lane level crossing in Barnsley town centre is to close next spring and will be replaced by a footbridge, if the plans are approved.

    The work is expected to cost about £5m.

    A temporary footbridge is being proposed to maintain access until a permanent version is completed by the end of 2019.

    She was the Police and Crime Commissioner's preferred candidate for the post.

    Ms Winward became acting Chief Constable following Dave Jones' retirement earlier this year.

    Police say emergency services were called to Severn Court, in Broomhill, at about 23:55.

    The occupants of the flat were not injured.

    The 73-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards nearby and remains in police custody.

    Business owners in Scarborough need to think about their on-street advertising boards after a rise in complaints from visitors, according to the council.

    North Yorkshire County Council says every year it gets complaints from people who say the boards are causing problems, especially when it's busy.

    The council admits the boards are important for attracting trade, but says they can be dangerous.

    People with visual impairments, wheelchair or mobility scooter users and families with pushchairs are most affected by the boards, the council says.

    Advertising boards can't be placed near crossings or next to metal guardrails or bollards, the authority adds.

    A growing number of women in Yorkshire are deciding to freeze their eggs to delay pregnancy until later in life.

    One woman from York, who froze her eggs nine years ago, wants the government to increase the 10-year time limit they can be stored.

    Claire Fenelon already has one child, but in the next few months she has to decide if she wants to get pregnant again or have her eggs destroyed.

    She says: "It seems a waste to save them for all that time just to be told that they can't use them now because the law says it's 10 years maximum."

    A 21-year-old man was stabbed in what police say was a "targeted" attack in an alleyway on Langsett Close just before 18:45 on Tuesday.

    The victim is still in hospital being treated for his injuries and is in a serious but stable condition.

    An 18-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
