    A man wanted in connection with a blaze in York is being sought by police.

    Officers say they want to speak to Dale Andrew Townsend (pictured), 25, from York, about a fire at a property in Melbourne Street on 6 July this year.

    They say despite extensive enquiries Mr Townsend, who also has connections to Leeds has not been found.

    Anyone who has seen him is asked to contact police.

    It's been revealed eight out of 10 shops tested in North Yorkshire sold knives to a child.

    The county's trading standards team sent a 16-year-old volunteer to buy a knife, both over the counter and online.

    It’s illegal in the UK to sell a knife to anyone under 18, unless it has a folding blade three inches long (7.62 cm) or less.

    On three occasions a 16-year-old volunteer was able to purchase a knife from retail premises.

    Trading standards officers say the sale rate increased when attempting online purchases, with five North Yorkshire retailers selling to the volunteer.

    The volunteer child helpers, who assist trading standards, have strict rules to follow:

    They are instructed to tell the truth at all times and to provide identification showing their true age if asked.

    Online retailers have an obligation to maintain age verification processes to ensure sales of knives are only to those over 18.

    Police want to speak to this man after an assault at a takeaway in Huddersfield.

    It happened on 28 July at Malaikas takeaway on Cross Church Street.

    Two men were having an argument, which resulted in a 27-year-old man being assaulted.

    A Sheffield food bank is growing its own fruit and veg in an allotment, because it can't keep up with the demand.

    Staff at the S2 food bank, external, based on the Manor, say they've been desperate for provisions for their food club, where families can buy a basket of shopping at discounted prices.

    Now organisers have come up with the idea of creating an allotment to grow more food.

    Sue Rose from the food bank, says: "This is one of the worst deprived areas in Britain and we see 65 people of all ages each week over the three days that we open.

    "This year we are short of 3.6 tonnes of food. If I can bulk that out, we will have more money to spend."

    The allotment will provide a supply of free food from next spring.

    People will be encouraged to help on the allotment.

    There'll also be educational sessions on cooking, portion sizes and reheating leftovers, for people benefiting from the food they've grown.

    The organisation that overseas public health says it's a major concern that the number of pregnant women smoking in Scarborough is still considerably higher than the national average.

    The number of women smoking at the time of birth there has gone down slightly - Three years ago it was one in five pregnant women who smoked, it is now one in six.

    Public Health England say that is still far higher than the national average of one in ten women.

    It says it needs to do more to reach out to smokers before they're pregnant and it needs to target disadvantaged communities.

    The Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, says work's due to begin on a new section of York's outer ring road.

    It's one of a number of new road schemes around the country, announced by Mr Grayling at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham today.

    The maker of Hovis bread is to sell its mill in Selby.

    The company also revealed a £11.7m loss after tax when making the announcement today.

    Hovis will sell the Selby flour mill, and another in Manchester, to Whitworth Brothers Limited.

    Its chief executive Nish Kankiwala says the firm was "showing strong momentum" and the disposal of the mills was "part of the process to future-proof our core baking business".

    A total ban on smoking and vaping at all of Sheffield's council premises has been put in place from today.

    The ban includes all grounds, courtyards, entrances, car parks and depots.

    Changes to the council’s smokefree, external policy apply to all employees, customers, visitors, contractors, volunteers and members of the public.

    The council says it's introducing the changes to help protect the health of its employees and residents.

    It says it wants to make its workplaces healthier environments for everyone.

  17. 'Father of Railways' rare notebook rediscoveredpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    A notebook kept by George Stephenson, known as the father of the railways, has been found after laying unseen for more than 50 years.

    The notebook, dated 1822, contains details of the world’s first passenger railway to use locomotives.

    It was found by John Page, a records assistant at Network Rail's archive in York.

    It outlines Stephenson’s redesign of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and became the blueprint for the railways that followed.

    John uncovered the notebook, not seen since the 1950s, while searching for plans in the archive’s deeds room.

    The room contains about 20,000 documents.

    He said: “Because it's historical it would never have been loaned out or requested, so since the 1950s, it's sat on a shelf unnoticed.

    “I was looking for a deed for one of our colleagues and out of curiosity decided to look through the packets, and there it was.”

    The notebook, signed by G Stephenson at Killingworth Colliery on 18 January 1822, is bound in its original form and is written in ink with pencil annotations.

    It will now go on display at the National Railway Museum in York.

    Police in York are warning people in the city to be on the look out for a man wanted for breaching a non-molestation order and for assault and criminal damage.

    Officers believe Barry Smith, 36, may be in the Water Lane, Walmgate or Fossgate area of the city and may be sleeping rough in the city.

    They say despite "extensive enquiries," Mr Smith, has not been found.

    Anyone who has seen him, or has any information which would assist officers locate him, is being asked asked to contact police.
