Yorkshire two-wheeled death statistics revealedpublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2018
About 17 cyclists and motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured on roads in Yorkshire every week, new figures show.
The statistics have been published at the start of Road Safety Week by Yorkshire-based charity Brake, external to encourage more drivers to be aware of fellow road users.
Last year, almost 900 cyclists and motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured on Yorkshire’s roads.
Brake is calling for drivers to be "bike smart" by slowing down and looking properly at junctions.
The charity also suggests drivers do the so-called "Dutch reach", which means opening the car door using the hand furthest from the handle, which forces drivers to turn and look behind them.
Steve Pettit, who runs a bike shop in Hull, says he isn't at all surprised by the charity's statistics.
He says: "The amount of people who come in that have been knocked off - it's not always their fault, but sometimes it is, if they haven't made themselves visible or they take short cuts."
