Beginning in 2007 researchers have recruited 14,000 mothers and babies across this city. Each has donated blood and tissue samples and completed a lengthy questionnaire, running to 42 pages, detailing diet, family structures, relationships, incomes, mental and physical health. The project is run by Professor John Wright, a consultant clinical epidemiologist at Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust, who said that Born in Bradford had set in motion a quiet revolution in the city:
“There’s much more recognition that just being part of the study has made mothers much more aware of diet and health and many say they have made changes to improve their health.
“What’s also interesting is the effect it’s had on galvanising the city – when we set out on the study we didn’t realise it would become part of the city’s.” “This spotlight of research makes you think about your health much more: because we’re always asking questions it does trigger changes and the other aspect of it is the results that the study is producing. We’ve found very clear evidence about being in green spaces and the impact on the future long term health of the baby,” says Professor Wright.
The research began in response to poor health in the city and high levels of child morbidity and mortality. Bradford had child mortality rates twice the national average – and rising at a time when they were falling everywhere else. Radio 4 has been given exclusive access to this research and to some of the families taking part, returning year after year to chart progress in a series of documentaries.

A potential sale of Hull City will not go ahead before Christmas and might not happen at all, according sources close to the football club.
There are doubts around the sale, to a Middle-east consortium led by former chairman Paul Duffen, which it was hoped would go through before Christmas.
Club sources are adamant a fee was agreed for the sale weeks ago and claim the deal has hit a snag because of problems getting clarification on the potential for developing land around the KCOM stadium.
I'm told the club will leave the door open for Mr Duffen but will now reopen talks with two other potential buyers. It remains to be seen how credible they are, but sources say the price being asked is not a barrier to any sale.
Meanwhile, I'm told it will be business as usual at the club, which in terms of Hull City fans means wondering if a sale by the owners, the Allams, will ever happen.
Geoff Bielby, from Hull City Supporters Trust, said: "We will work and deal with any responsible owner of Hull City."
While deputy leader of Hull City Council, Darren Hale, says "the uncertainty is not good for the city in general".
The Allam family, who took over in 2010, first began trying to sell the club in 2014 and fans have repeatedly protested against their ownership.
Homeless people in Hull who were set to stay in hotel rooms over Christmas have had their booking cancelled.
Carl Simpson, founder of the Raise the Roof Homeless Project, told the BBC he paid £1,092 for 14 twin rooms at the Royal Hotel in Hull, part of the Britannia Hotels group.
In a Facebook post , externalshared by hundreds, Mr Simpson said he was "gutted".
An employee at the Royal Hotel told the BBC there was no-one available to comment.
Former footballer and boxing champion Curtis Woodhouse has offered to open his gym to homeless people at Christmas after a hotel in Hull cancelled their Christmas booking.
He says he's been in touch with the project Raise the Roof, which said its plans to help 28 homeless people in Hull have been scuppered by the Royal Hotel after it cancelled its booking.
The former Sheffield United midfielder has arranged with a taxi company to take anyone who's interested to his gym in Driffield.
He says he's received more than 15,000 Facebook messages since offering the gym to "anyone who is homeless, or struggling and needs somewhere to stay".
The former British light-welterweight champion said: "I always think if you're in a position to help you should help, people are freezing cold and need somewhere to stay and we've got a place available."
After a pensioner in York narrowly avoided being tricked out of thousands of pounds police are warning others to be aware of scams.
The 73-year-old man, who doesn't wish to be named, nearly lost £6,500 after being phoned by someone, claiming to be a police officer.
The fake officer asked him to withdraw the money from his bank, so a courier could check to see if the notes were counterfeit.
Once he got home from the bank with the money, he received more calls from people claiming to be from the police and the bank, telling him many of the notes he'd been given were forged.
The man then became suspicious and contacted North Yorkshire Police who intervened before the courier turned up.
Andy Fox, a Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer at North Yorkshire Police, says he hears about at least 20 similar schemes each month.
He says: "The police will never ever call you and ask you to attend your bank and transfer money or take money out on their behalf."
Carl Simpson, of the Raise the Roof Homeless Project, says the Royal Hotel cancelled rooms without explanation.
