    The wooden staircase of a 14th Century building in a botanical garden in York is to be replaced after fears it has become a hazard.

    The Grade II-listed Hospitium, in the city's Museum Gardens, was named the best wedding venue in Yorkshire at the English Wedding Awards this year., external

    A planning application statement says: "The staircase is now defective and is increasingly a hazard, as it also functions as the fire escape stair for the upper hall."

    If the plans go ahead, the existing staircase will be removed and replaced with a "structurally sound" set of stairs, fitting the appearance of the building.

    Police say they are not treating the death of a man found dead in a street in Hull as suspicious.

    The emergency services were called to Arncliffe Close following a report of concern over the safety of a man.

    Humberside Police say officers arrived just after 08:00 and "sadly" found the man dead.

    Officers said a file is being prepared for the coroner.

    A window and a door were damaged after what is believed to have been a shotgun was fired at a house in Doncaster.

    Police officers are searching for a 16-year-old girl who hasn't been since since last week.

    Pamela Horvathova was last seen on Friday in the Staniforth Road area of Sheffield.

    She was reported missing on Monday.

    South Yorkshire Police said officers were concerned for her welfare.

    She was last seen wearing a black coat, with blue trousers and black shoes and has black and blonde hair.

    Commuters using Leeds railway station should be able to look up from the platform and see the sky next summer.

    Work's started on the £161m redevelopment of the station.

    It includes a new transparent roof over the main concourse, a new platform and alterations to platforms and tracks.

    The street outside the front of the station will be altered, with part of the road pedestrianised and a number of bus stops moved.

    Network Rail said the roof is expected to be finished by next summer with the rest of the work completed by 2021.

    Concrete barriers have been installed outside a shop ram-raided in Sheffield last week.

    The JD Sports shop on The Moor was left with glass smashed and trainers scattered over the floor during the early morning incident on Monday 17 December.

    Now, concrete blocks have been placed outside the glass frontage of the shop to stop repeat attacks.

    It's believed a large number of designer clothes were stolen in the raid.

    York residents are being encouraged to give up alcohol for "Dry January" after figures showed 30% of people in the city drink more than the recommended 14 units of alcohol per week - compared to the English average of 26%.

    City of York Council want people to "enjoy the benefits from having a break from drinking" and says they could "feel healthier, save money and improve their relationship with alcohol long term".

    Councillor Carol Runciman, executive member for health and adult social care, said: “After the excesses of the festive period, Dry January can help you to have a healthy start to 2019."

    A man is due to appear in court today accused of murdering a toddler from Hull almost five years ago.

    Jonathan Garner, 25, of Thirlmere Avenue, Hull, faces charges relating to the death of the 22-month-old girl in February 2014.

    Garner and his former partner Samantha Gregson, 25, of Melling Close, Chesterfield, are also charged with failing to protect a child.

    Humberside Police say the pair were charged following an "extensive and complex investigation" and will appear at Hull Crown Court today.

    Visitors arriving at Bridlington railway station are being warned about future engineering works around the area.

    A multi-million pound scheme to establish a new transport interchange outside of the station, and to create a new one-way street, leading past the station, is scheduled to begin in the new year.

    Major building work is expected to take place during the summer holiday season.

    Police say they want people to come forward with information after a 55-year-old woman died in West Yorkshire after being hit by a private hire vehicle.

    Caroline Greatorex was injured on Saturday 1 December and died on Friday 21 December.

    Officers say: "She and a Honda Accord Private Hire vehicle were in collision on Friarwood Lane at the junction with Southgate."

    Detective Sergeant Fiona Hoodless said: “This was a tragic incident in which a lady has lost her life.

    “Although we have previously asked for the public’s help with this I would again like to appeal to anyone who saw the incident to come forward."

    Police say they want to speak to anyone who saw the collision, which happened at about 06:45, or anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage.

    Friends of a West Yorkshire man who died after he was punched because of a drunken prank on a night out are holding a fundraising event in his memory tonight.

    Tom Hulme, 23, from Leeds, was hit after throwing a friend's shoe out of a car window in London two years ago .

    He died later from a brain injury.

    His friend George Elliott said: "You see it all the time in Leeds, especially when people are fuelled up on alcohol and whatever else, it can sometimes result in a fight and it only takes one punch to kill someone."

    Tonight's fundraiser is being held at the Distrikt Bar in Leeds city centre.

    The Leeds Library, the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the UK, is celebrating 250 years of lending.

    The ancient collection sits above a bank on one of Leeds's busiest shopping streets.

    The building is easily walked by unless you look up and spot its blue plaque and gold signage.

    Established in 1768, The Leeds Library is housed inside a three-storey Grade II* Greek revivalist structure on Commercial Street, with only the very highest book shelves visible from street level.

    Electric cars are currently being built in workshops across Hull as the city's young people gear up for the UK's first closed road electric car race next year.

    The event, organised by the Greenpower Trust and Greenport Hull, is being held in the city in April and will see local youngsters make and drive the cars.

    The race will be staged in the Guildhall area of the city.

    A grand Victorian mansion carved from a huge rock and buried under landfill and a tower block could be brought back to life with a 3D experience.

    Doncaster's Sand House was hewn from a huge lump of sandstone in a quarry by entrepreneur Henry Senior in the 1850s.

    The house and grounds were filled with rubbish and, once full, topped with the council's 1960s Silverwood flats.

    Now Senior's great-great-grandson wants to create virtual views of the house's carvings and tunnels beneath.

    Richard Bell said he became aware of his family connections with the Sand House in the 1980s and later launched a charity to give more information about the "remarkable" structure, with walks, talks, and educational events.

    Mr Bell is in talks with Doncaster College students about creating the 3D experience.

    People would wear a 3D headset to see down the tunnels and marvel at the intricate carvings and the quarry, he said.

    The relatives of a man from Dewsbury who has died are being sought.

    Coroner’s officers are appealing for help in tracing any relatives of Carl Geoffrey Dewhirst.

    Mr Dewhirst, 48, lived at Northstead, Ravensthorpe. He died on 21 December.

    West Yorkshire Police say his death is not being treated as suspicious.

    Officers believe Mr Dewhirst may have had a brother or a nephew.

    Anyone with information about Mr Dewhirst is asked to contact the Coroner’s Office.

    Almost 50,000 potholes were reported to local councils across Yorkshire last year.

    The data was complied by the RAC Foundation who say across the UK "the condition of our roads is worsening".

    Damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs and distorted wheels are among the most common vehicle problems caused by potholes.

    The government said it was spending £6.5bn on road repairs from 2015-2021.
