'Worrying' rise in crime in North Yorkshirepublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2019
There's been a 13% rise in recorded crimes in North Yorkshire, new figures reveal.
The county's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan says the rise "was expected, but is worrying".
Crime figures for the year ending September 2018 from the Office of National Statistics show the year-on-year increase.
Ms Mulligan says the rise paints a negative picture, but changes to how crimes are recorded are partly responsible.
She says there has been a small rise which is worrying and she can understand people will be concerned.
"In terms of crime statistics North Yorkshire remains the safest place live in England," she adds.
Overall crimes recorded by police in England and Wales went up by 7% in that period, with a total of 5,723,182 offences recorded.
