  15. Pickle juice stops cramps in athletes - Sheffield lecturerpublished at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2019

Pickle juice could be the next big thing to stop athletes from cramping up, according a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University.

The "terrible" tasting drink tells the body not to cramp up, which Dr Mayur Ranchordas from the Sheffield university says is why it's becoming popular with sports people.

"It triggers a reflex in the mouth which sends a signal to stop muscles from cramping", according to Dr Ranchordas.

"That's why it is drank at the onset of cramp. It stops cramping 40% faster than drinking water."

Dr Ranchordas says it is particularly effective as a treatment for cramps in warmer conditions or when sporting occasions last longer than anticipated - be it a five-set tennis match or in extra time of a football game.

It's also good for your breath apparently. Who knew?
