    Police have launched a special operation to catch gangs who steal from lorries in North Yorkshire.

    It will concentrate on areas where lorry drivers are vulnerable such as service stations and lay-bys, according to the North Yorkshire force.

    This year, police say they've so far received about 50 reports of goods being stolen, lorries being tampered with and one driver being threatened.

    West Yorkshire Labour MP Yvette Cooper has said she watched Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris burn last night.

    She says she left the banks of the River Seine after the 850-year-old landmark's spire fell because she couldn't bear to watch anymore.

  3. Elite prison officers get most calls from HMP Humberpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 16 April 2019

    Elite prison officers trained to deal with riots and hostage-taking were called out to HMP Humber more times than any other prison last year.

    The number of incidents dealt with across the country doubled in six years, according to information gathered by the BBC using the Freedom of Information Act.

    The National Tactical Response Group dealt with 40 incidents at HMP Humber last year and with 600 other incidents in prisons across England and Wales.

    The officers are scrambled to tackle hostage situations, prisoners climbing on to roofs or safety netting, or barricading themselves in their cells.

    But the Ministry Of Justice says the majority of call-outs were for non-violent incidents.

  6. 'Drug-related' death in Sheffield sparks safety warningpublished at 07:06 British Summer Time 16 April 2019

    Police in Sheffield have issued an urgent drugs safety warning after a woman died and two men were left seriously ill in the city.

    The 33-year-old woman was pronounced dead at a property on Sackville Road in Crookes in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    Two men, aged 41 and 42, were found collapsed and unconscious at the same property and remain in a critical condition in hospital, police say.

    The family and friends of the woman are being given support by South Yorkshire Police officers, the force adds.

    Det Sgt Gregory Dakin said: "While the cause of death has not yet been established, we do believe it was drug-related and we are conducting a number of enquiries to ascertain the circumstances.

    "Drugs can have severe consequences and damaging effects and we want to encourage people who may be affected either by the use of drugs, both legal and illegal substances, or have concerns for a loved one who may be affected, to please seek help and advice from health professionals," he said.

    The mum of a York student who died in the river Ouse in the city five years ago is calling for a campaign to raise awareness of the danger of the city's rivers.

    Megan Roberts (pictured), who studied at York St John University died after a night out in 2014.

    In the past week, three further people have been found dead in the city's rivers.

    Jackie Roberts said it was sad to see yet more deaths in York's rivers and that more education and training is needed.

    City of York Council has ruled out putting up railings and York Rescue Boat says measures have been introduced to improve river safety.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in Yorkshire this Tuesday morning, there are some disruptions and cancellations to be aware of.

    According to National Rail Enquiries, emergency services are currently dealing with an incident between Hebden Bridge/Halifax and Huddersfield/Mirfield.

    This means that trains running between these stations may be cancelled or revised.

  9. Notre-Dame: Minster staff 'shocked and saddened' by firepublished at 06:30

    Staff at York Minster say they're "shocked and saddened" after a major fire engulfed the medieval cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, one of France's most famous landmarks.

    Firefighters have managed to save the 850-year-old Gothic building's main stone structure, including its two towers, but the spire and roof have collapsed.

    A shipping container, a laptop and money have all been donated after a Wakefield organisation, which offers 'pay as you feel' food, was broken into.

    The Real Junk Food Project stops tonnes of food going to landfill by selling it cheaper to people who might otherwise struggle to afford it.

    It said it wouldn't be pressing charges after £250 was stolen from the "Kindness Sharehouse" yesterday, but have instead invited the thief back to the warehouse to help volunteer.

    The organisation's Facebook post talks about how its safe was damaged, donation buckets smashed and its van key was stolen.

    Since then, the organisation said it has had dozens of offers of help, including an engineer offering to come out and replace the stolen van key.

    "We are not pressing charges, but just want to invite the person in to meet and volunteer with us", the organisation told the BBC.

    "People have come together spectacularly well.

    "When something negative happens, our motto is just to kill them with kindness."

    A 24-year-old man allegedly had vital medication stolen during an assault near a pub in Hull.

    The victim was approached by a man and woman who asked him for the time, on Hall Road, near the Rampant Horse pub.

    He was punched by both the man and woman, leaving him with cuts to his nose, during the incident at about 13:00 on Wednesday.

    Humberside Police is looking for a white woman, in her late 30s, who has light brown hair and was wearing a white jacket.

    She was with a man who was described as white, aged about 40, wearing a blue cap with a green and blue jacket and black Adidas tracksuit bottoms.

    Hand-knitted swimmers, policemen and firefighters are among the latest additions to Thirsk after a yarnbombing group decorated the North Yorkshire market town to celebrate local volunteers.

    Bollards, signposts and trees in and around Thirsk Market Place have been covered with knitted designs recognising local organisations.

    Thirsk Yarnbombers have decorated the town on multiple occasions, most notably for Remembrance Day when they covered St Mary's Church with knitted poppies.

    Yarnbombing, also known as guerrilla knitting, is a type of street art using knitted or crocheted items.

    A Sheffield primary school has taken matters into its own hands to tackle the issue of air pollution from traffic and idling cars outside school.

    Headteacher Michael Watson, from Hunters Bar Junior School on Sharrow Vale Road, says it's about educating people about air pollution.

    Children and teachers have written letters to parents to ask them to use their cars less and to walk instead.

    The letter says staff and pupils see a "scramble of cars around the school" pumping pollution into the air.

    It adds that walking to school is also good for pupil's independence.
