    The man was arrested on Sunday after officers responded to a report a man was threatening to harm a person.

    Humberside Police carried out a search of the area before the suspect was eventually located in Hutton Cranswick.

    Police officers will be patrolling lorry parks in North Yorkshire as part of an operation to catch criminal gangs who target HGVs and the cargo they carry.

    Operation Cargo, which started today, will see high-visibility policing with the hope of deterring would-be thieves.

    There have been 50 reports of stolen cargo from lorries in the county this year, North Yorkshire Police said.

    A man from South Yorkshire has begun an epic 526-mile walk around Yorkshire today.

    Ian Fletcher has come up with a route called the Wild Yorkshire Way - it takes in most of the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales.

    The challenge will start and finish at Stainborough Cricket Club and it is expected to take six weeks to complete.

    The challenge is raising money for the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team.

  6. Yorkshire runners complete Marathon des Sablespublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 15 April 2019

    Runners from East Yorkshire have completed a 156-mile ultra-marathon in the Sahara desert, known as one of the toughest races in the world.

    The four men underwent acclimatisation training at the University of Hull before completing the Marathon Des Sables.

    One of the runners, retired police officer Andy Kirk from Swanland, said: "You get to the point where you just become a zombie and you've got to keep putting one foot in front of the other to keep going and get through."

    Sixties star Lulu is set to play in Bridlington Spa as part of a mammoth tour announced today.

    The Shout star will bring her show to town on Wednesday 16 October as part of a 35-date trek around the UK.

    The 70-year-old said: "We'll be playing here, there and everywhere, so I invite fans old and new to come along and share a great night covering my six decades in music."

    Police will not carry out their own investigation into expenses claims made by the former chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire.

    Sir Gary Verity paid back £40,000 before resigning on health grounds last month.

    West Yorkshire Police said it would await the findings of an independent investigation commissioned by the tourism company.

    Liberal Democrat peer Lord Scriven said he was "astounded" by the force's decision.

    Last month the former leader of Sheffield City Council wrote to the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire, asking for the force to investigate expenses claims made by Sir Gary.

    A force spokesman said that following a meeting with Welcome to Yorkshire representatives it had agreed the full findings of an independent review will be shared with the force.

    A 19-year-old man had to have his leg amputated after he was hit by a car in Rotherham last month, police say.

    A black Audi A4 was travelling from Dun Road to Bridge Street in Swinton when it hit two pedestrians at about 02:40 on Saturday 23 March.

    One of the men had to have his leg amputated and another, aged 18, suffered broken bones.

    North Yorkshire County Council has begun a 12-week public consultation this morning, with almost 50,000 households being urged to give their thoughts.

    County Councillor Don Mackenzie said: "It’s important we understand the impact of congestion on the thousands of people who live in or visit Harrogate and Knaresborough.

    "We all contribute to congestion, so we all need to be part of the solution."

    Plans to demolish a former Victorian orphanage in Bradford have been approved after the building failed to gain listed status.

    Joseph Nutter House, next to Horton Park, was turned down for protection by Historic England, which said it "lacked special architectural and historic interest".

    Mohammed Farid, who submitted the demolition application, said the building would be replaced with "a new employment development".

    Bradford Council said as the building is not listed, or in a Conservation Area, there was no reason to block the plans.

    Members of Bradford Civic Society said the loss of the former orphanage was "a sad day for Bradford's heritage".

    Roads around a memorial in Sheffield remembering the 96 football fans who died at Hillsborough will be closed this afternoon for the annual service commemorating the tragedy.

    It's 30 years since the Liverpool fans died in a crush at the Leppings Lane end of the Sheffield Wednesday stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

    The service, which will take place at the memorial in Parkside Road, is due to take place just before 15:00.

    Roads near the main entrance to the stadium will be closed during the service from 14:45 for approximately 30 minutes.

    Comedian Jason Manford is to star in a new BBC TV comedy series called Scarborough.

    He will appear alongside former Coronation Street regulars Catherine Tyldesley and Stephanie Cole in the show set in the seaside town.

    The series, written and directed by Benidorm creator Derren Litten, will centre on a community bonded by friendship, family and karaoke.

    Litten said: "I can't wait for BBC audiences to get caught up in the laughter, love and intrigue I've created, all set against the backdrop of this beautiful North Yorkshire fishing town."

    Manford took to Twitter following the announcement to say he was "thrilled" to be involved.

    A wanted Leeds man, who barricaded his door as police tried to get in, slipped through the floorboards as part of his escape.

    The man had a hole in the floor in the west Leeds house which led to his neighbour's property.

    He also installed a metal swing bar to reinforce the door meaning he could get more time to get away, according to West Yorkshire Police.
