    Police in Selby have told a wanted man to hand himself in, because "we will find you eventually".

    Police believe Robert Matthews, who has links to the Selby and Sherburn-in-Elmet areas, is actively avoiding officers.

    North Yorkshire Police issued a photograph of the 33-year-old who is wanted in connection with an incident in Selby on 7 April.

    PC Daniel Kirven, of Selby Police, said: “Matthews, if you are reading this, your best option is to come to Selby police station as previously arranged, rather than avoid us.

    "We will find you eventually, so please do not put this off any longer.”

  3. Assange cyber attack: Barnsley Council apologisepublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 16 April 2019

    Barnsley Council has apologised for disruption to its website this morning, following a claim from hackers claiming to support Julian Assange.

    The website had been targeted by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS), making the page inaccessible.

    Both Barnsley Council and Bedale Town Council were targeted this morning.

    The website was fixed by 11:30.

    Although no customer data was stolen or lost, the attack was "extremely disruptive," the council said.

    "This type of attack can be extremely disruptive as key services are put out of action.

    "We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused".

    Police stopped 36 vehicles yesterday as part of an operation aimed at fly-tipping in North Yorkshire.

    The number of children who've been permanently excluded from schools in Yorkshire has more than doubled in the last five years.

    Teaching unions are concerned it's down to so-called "off rolling," where difficult pupils are removed from school and put into a referral unit or are educated at home.

    The BBC research comes amid calls for more research into links between schools excluding pupils and their position within league tables.

    The National Education Union is debating the issue at its annual conference this week.

    Sally Kincaid, from the organisation's Wakefield branch, said: "A toxic combination of cuts and data-driven exam factories means that lots of our youngsters are losing out on education and actually ending up on the streets."

    Until recent years the brass bands of the north were the preserve of men, but not anymore - An all women brass band has been formed in York.

    The famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band performed in the British Open with a female musician in 2010, the first time it had done so since the 1950s.

    Hackers claim to have taken two Yorkshire council's websites offline as part of a campaign to free Julian Assange.

    The websites for Barnsley Council and Bedale Town Council appear to have been targeted this morning, following the arrest of the WikiLeaks founder earlier this month.

    Barnsley Council said it was unaware of a cyber attack, while Bedale Town Council said it was unaware of a website issue.

    A pair of hacking groups, the Philippine Cyber Eagles and Anonymous Espana, have claimed responsibility on Twitter.

    The 47-year-old Australian, who had been taking refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, could face extradition to the United States.

    A new £60,000 clinical trial into a rare disease will be held in Hull, it has been announced.

    University researchers, working with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, hope to use an existing drug to fight sarcoidosis, a potentially fatal disease that affects more than 7,000 people across the UK.

    The trial is being funded by charity SarcoidosisUK through donations to its 20th anniversary campaign.

    Villagers living near York have been urged to plan ahead for travel disruption caused by next month's Tour de Yorkshire.

    The first stage of the event will take riders on a fast and flat route from Doncaster to Selby, going through Elvington, Wheldrake and Escrick in the late afternoon on Thursday 2 May.

    There will be traffic disruption due to rolling road closures, with local buses also expected to be delayed, however pedestrians will still have access to polling stations for local elections.

    Sheffield's Roman Catholic cathedral's bells will be rung tomorrow morning "as a symbol of solidarity" with Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris after it was ravaged by fire.

    No ringing was planned for Holy Week, but in a statement, staff at St Marie's Cathedral said they "wanted to show our thoughts and prayers are with Notre-Dame".

    The ringing is also intended to "express our confidence that its bells will one day ring out over Paris and a fully restored cathedral".

    The ringing will take place before the 11:00 Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Lord's Supper at 20:00 on Maundy Thursday.
