    A fleet of high speed trains for the East Coast Main Line will be put through their final tests today before carrying their first passengers later this week.

    It's claimed the Azumas, built by Hitachi, the same firm which made Japan's Bullet Train, will speed up journeys to London.

    Rail company LNER says it will offer extra services to Harrogate, Hull, Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield as a result of the introduction of the 65 new trains.

    The new trains are set to begin operating on the East Coast Main Line five months later than planned.

    Plans to introduce the trains in December were abandoned after the electric-diesel locomotives were found to interfere with trackside signalling equipment.

    Police officers are asking motorists to avoid the M1 near Wakefield after a crash this morning.

    It's happened near junction 39 on the northbound carriageway.

    Pictures from the scene show two cars blocking the road, with a black car facing the wrong way.

    Emergency services are at the scene, West Yorkshire Police confirmed.

    A public swimming pool near York city centre is closed this morning due to an "incident".

    Yearsley Pool, on Haxby Road, has been closed "for a temporary period" and police are currently on site following what's being described as a break-in.

    A statement on the pool's website says, external: "We apologise for the inconvenience, we hope to reopen later in the day."

    A serving East Riding of Yorkshire councillor has died, less than a week after returning to the council following the local elections at the start of the month.

    Conservative councillor Richard Harrap, who represented Bridlington North, was previously the council's cabinet spokesman on adult services.

    According to a statement from Caroline Lacey, chief executive of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, councillor Harrap was "a great man".

    He will be "sorely missed by his colleagues and friends at the council and by everyone whose lives he has touched", she adds.

    Bridlington's MP Sir Greg Knight said on social media he was shocked and saddened by the news.

    A second arrest has been made in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl who collapsed and died after taking ecstasy in a North Yorkshire town at the weekend.

    Leah Heyes was found in Applegarth car park in Northallerton on Saturday night and died later in hospital.

    The cause of her death hasn't been determined, but police believe she had taken the drug MDMA.

    An 18-year-old man was arrested last night on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, according to police.

    He was interviewed and has since been released while under investigation.

    A 17-year-old boy who was arrested on Monday on suspicion of supplying class A drugs has also been released while under investigation.

    The co-owners of newly-promoted Sheffield United have clashed in a High Court battle for control of the Premier League football club.

    Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud each own 50% of the Blades.

    The dispute is based on the terms of a buyout provision in the initial investment agreement made between the men in 2013.

    Mr Justice Fancourt heard Mr McCabe and Prince Abdullah met in 2013 when Mr McCabe was looking for fresh investment in the club.

    Sheffield-born Mr McCabe, 71, has invested £100m in the club over many years, according to his barrister.

    Prince Abdullah invested £10m in 2013, but the two men "fell out" in 2017.

    The case is expected to last for several weeks.

    A man who died after a crash on the M62 in West Yorkshire last week has been named.

    Shay O'Connell, 50, from Bourne, died after his motorcycle hit a stationary vehicle at junction 24 of the eastbound carriageway in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

    In the same area that day a man fell from Scammonden Bridge and later died as a result of his injuries.

    Both carriageways of the motorway were closed as a result of these two incidents, causing significant traffic disruption both on the M62 and the surrounding road network.

    A primary school in York is expected to reopen later after vandals caused "considerable damage" during a break-in over the weekend.

    Year 6 pupils had to take their Sats tests at York High School yesterday due to the damage caused at Dringhouses Primary.

    A safe and electrical equipment were stolen from the premises during the burglary, North Yorkshire Police said.

    Gill Williams, headteacher of Dringhouses Primary, said the last few days had been difficult for everyone in the school community

    However, she added that she wanted to thank parents and carers for their understanding and support.

    She also thanked York High for stepping in to allow children to sit their Sats exams at the school on Monday.

    A teenage boy has been arrested in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl who collapsed and died after taking ecstasy in North Yorkshire.

    The boy, 17, was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs after the death of Leah Heyes, who died in hospital after collapsing in Northallerton on Saturday evening.

    Police were called after the teenager collapsed in Applegarth car park at 21:30.

    Her cause of death has not been determined, but police believe she had taken the drug MDMA.

    Officers say they have not ruled out further arrests.

    A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "We believe Leah had taken the drug MDMA - also known as ecstasy or a "bomb" - prior to collapsing and we reiterate our warning to anyone who uses drugs of the potential consequences."

    A transgender LGBT rights campaigner and former taxi driver who won £4m on a lottery scratchcard has died.

    Melissa Ede bought the winning card when she stopped for petrol on her way to work in December 2017.

    Before her win the 58-year-old, from Hull, was known for her online videos and TV appearances and had thousands of followers on social media.

    Humberside Police confirmed she died on Saturday night and said her death was not suspicious.

    The Fostering Network says it wants to attract families that can foster sibling groups to keep children together.

    The organisation says: "Without extra foster families in Yorkshire being found during 2019, some children will find themselves living a long way from their family, school and friends, being split up from brothers and sisters."

    Paul and Michael Atwal-Brice, foster carers from Rotherham, said: "The best thing about fostering is seeing the children trusted in your care develop and grow; to see them become more confident.

    "We are currently fostering teenagers long term and, although this can be tricky at times, it is great to teach them the skills they need to live a successful and happy life as adults."
