    The gold medal-winning Yorkshire canal garden at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show has been attracting some of the region's most famous faces.

    Designed by Mark Gregory, the display brings Yorkshire to the heart of London by incorporating a canal lock built from reclaimed York stone, a lock keeper's cottage, authentic lock gates and a meadow.

    York's acting royalty, Dame Judy Dench (top), visited in an aptly floral dress and the Bard of Barnsley, poet Ian McMillan (above), who wrote a poem about the garden, did some pensive pondering amid the tranquil scene.

    If you're travelling on the East Coast Main Line this morning, this is the reason why you may well have been affected by long delays and slow progress:

    Train company LNER has released this image of the damage caused to an overhead cable between Retford and Newark North Gate.

    The damage means the southbound line of the East Coast Main Line is currently blocked.

    Hull, Leeds, Newcastle and London trains are affected and may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes, according to National Rail Enquries.

    The company says it doesn't know yet what caused the damage. Disruption is expected until 12:00.

    Police are investigating after reports a 12-year-old girl was raped in woods in Sheffield at the weekend.

    The girl was reportedly attacked at about 03:30 on Sunday morning in Richmond Heights Woods.

    The girl and her family are currently receiving support, South Yorkshire Police confirmed.

    Police in West Yorkshire are continuing to search for a 21-year-old woman who went missing while on a night out in Leeds at the weekend.

    Hannah Barker, 21, from Whinmoor, was out with friends on Saturday night and was last seen when she left them at about 03:40.

    Officers say there are concerns for her welfare after her car was found parked in the St John’s Centre car park and she failed to turn up at work yesterday morning.

    Hannah is described as white, 5ft 6ins tall and of large build, with long blonde hair, nose piercings and tattoos on her left arm,.

    She was last seen wearing black skinny jeans, a burgundy t-shirt and trainers.

    Det Insp Melissa Porritt said: “We are very concerned for Hannah’s welfare as it is out of character for her to go missing like this and for her not to have been in touch with anyone.

    “We are carrying out extensive inquiries to trace her movements in the city centre and would like to hear urgently from anyone who has seen her or who has any information that could assist us in tracing her."

    Hull City Council has secured government money of more than £700,000 which will pay for a hub offering advice and a safe place to stay for a short period.

    The centre will look at moving people away from living on the streets to permanent accommodation.

    If you're travelling by rail from York railway station you're being warned to expect delays.

    Damage to the overhead electric wires between Retford and Newark North Gate means the southbound line of the East Coast Main Line is currently blocked.

    National Rail Enquiries says Hull, Leeds, Newcastle and London trains are affected and may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes.

    Disruption is expected until 12:00.

    Hundreds of hopping enthusiasts in Sheffield are waiting to find out if they've set a new world record for the number of people playing hopscotch at the same time.

    According to Move More, the organisers of the attempt, a total of 664 stone throwers played the game in a city car park yesterday.

    The record for most people playing the game at one time currently stands at 621.

    Tom Hughes, from Move More, says he's sure they've not just "passed but smashed the record", but he says he's now waiting for official verification.

    A teenager accused of murdering a 17-year-old boy at a Halloween party in Halifax watched stabbing videos online days before the killing, a jury has heard.

    Jamie Brown, 17, died from a single wound after being attacked in Ovenden on 27 October.

    The accused, also 17, who cannot be named, denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

    Leeds Crown Court heard he looked at a graphic video of a man being stabbed to death in a jail "out of curiosity".

    He also denies wounding with intent, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

    Three other youths also face charges.

    The trial continues.

  12. Yorkshire garden wins gold at Chelsea Flower Showpublished at 07:53 British Summer Time 21 May 2019

    A garden celebrating Yorkshire's canals and industrial heritage has won a gold medal at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.

    The garden, by tourism organisation Welcome to Yorkshire and designed by Mark Gregory, features genuine canal lock gates donated by the Canal & River Trust.

    It's the 10th time Welcome to Yorkshire has entered a garden at the famous Royal Horticultural Society competition and was described as its "most ambitious to date".

    Reacting to the news, Welcome to Yorkshire said it was "amazing news" and that it was "over the moon".

    A student from York who was targeted by a so-called "cyberflasher" is urging people to protect themselves by changing their smartphone settings.

    Cyberflashing refers to the practice of graphic images being sent to people's phones via features like Bluetooth, and AirDrop on iPhones.

    Sophie Meehan says she was walking through a station when a man hidden within the crowds sent an explicit picture of himself through the file-sharing function on her phone.

    She says she checked social media afterwards and found hundreds of other women who said they'd also been "cyberflashed".

  15. Sheeran's Roundhay park gigs could hit 80,000 markpublished at 06:56 British Summer Time 21 May 2019

    Two concerts by the singer Ed Sheeran in Leeds this summer could be allowed to have crowds of up to 80,000 people each.

    The singer-songwriter, who's originally from West Yorkshire, is set to play two nights at Roundhay Park on 16 and 17 August.

    Leeds councillors are expected to vote later on whether to allow bigger crowds at the park, with the capacity limit for live events currently standing at just under 20,000.

    If the expansion plan is approved, it could mean a return to the glory days of the 1980s and 1990s, when the park hosted the biggest pop acts of the era.

    The Rolling Stones played at the park in 1982 - one of only four British venues on their European tour that year.

    In 1987 the park hosted Genesis, six weeks before Madonna played in front of 73,000 fans on the same site.

    At least two cars were used to smash through the window of a company on Wellington Place, just off Whitehall Road, at about 22:00 last night, police say.

    The offices are believed to belong to a company associated with Google.

    Police have taped off the scene as investigations continue.

    At the moment there are no suspects and no arrests have been made, police have confirmed.
