Scaffolding in the middle of Sheffield is set to stay up for another seven months, prompting the city council to take legal advice.
Council bosses and traders had been assured the scaffolding on Chapel Walk would be removed by June, but it now looks as though it will be there for a third Christmas shopping period.
It was originally erected in September 2017 and traders say they've seen a drop in business and shoppers complain the street is "dark, difficult to navigate and feels unsafe."
Contractor Headoffice says it “wants rid of the scaffolding” as much as anyone but the council is holding urgent meetings this week to discuss the delay.
Director Jonny Phillips said: “Since we were given a Letter of Intent recently we’ve made an initial early start in the last few weeks to try and mitigate any further delays."
Councillor Mazher Iqbal at Sheffield Council, said: “We've told the developer on several occasions delays are unacceptable and they've assured us the deadline will be met.
“To hear of more delays is simply unacceptable, for the council, the traders and the people who shop in the city centre.
“I am seeking legal advice to understand what options the council has to intervene based on the earlier assurances that have been made to us.”
