Plans to demolish the Queen Street road bridge near the station, alter the station's car parks and taxi rank and create a new frontage have been submitted by City of York Council.

The proposals would also see a new pedestrianised square constructed outside the main entrance and separate cycle lanes and bus bays introduced.

LNER, the train company which manages the station, has submitted an objection letter saying it has concerns the scale of the work will have a “major impact” on day-to-day activity at the site.

The letter adds: “The scheme delivers minimal to no benefit to the station or the wider rail network, but instead delivers direct benefits for the highway in and around the station.”

The council says it appreciates the scheme has to have LNER's approval before construction can begin and says it will continue to work with the rail operator and address its concerns.

  13. Leeds betting boss wants treatment centres for gamblerspublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 23 May 2019

The boss of a major Leeds-based online betting company says the industry hasn’t done enough to look after problem gamblers.

    Sky bet logo

Richard Flint, executive chairman of Sky Bet, says more must be done to stop people spending beyond their means, and gambling companies should consider funding addiction treatment centres.

Sky Bet has been at the centre of the growth of the online betting industry and the company last year was valued at more than £3bn.

Reflecting on his time at the company before he leaves his role next month, Mr Flint said: "In the past, the industry has perhaps encouraged people to spend beyond their means."

He added that the gambling industry itself should now consider funding a national network of treatment centres, without the introduction of a statutory tax.

The Gambling Commission estimates about 400,000 adults in Great Britain have a gambling problem.

The Gambling With Lives charity has described Mr Flint's comments as "insulting".

Its founders said he had underplayed the damage gambling addiction could do to people's lives.
