    The search for a group of climbers, including an academic from York, who went missing in the Himalayas eight days ago is due to resume today.

    Dr Richard Payne from the University of York was with a group of eight people attempting to reach the top of an unclimbed peak.

    It's believed they were struck by an avalanche.

    The missing group began climbing Nanda Devi on 13 May.

    Indian helicopter pilots say they spotted five bodies on the mountainside yesterday, before bad weather forced them to halt their operation.

    "Four bodies can be seen together and a fifth slightly away from the others," a senior official for the nearby Pithoragarh region told Reuters news agency.

    Kevin Webb was last seen leaving his home in Swinton and was reported missing, but South Yorkshire Police confirmed he has been found "safe and well".

    Two men have been charged with assaulting a police officer who was attacked outside an opticians in Scarborough.

    The assault took place in the early hours of Sunday, on Westborough, as the officer was dealing with an incident outside the Vision Express store.

    A 25-year-old-man and a 33-year-old man, both from Scarborough, have been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker.

    A 29-year-old man from Scarborough has also been charged with obstructing and resisting arrest and being drunk and disorderly.

    York's Festival of Ideas begins today with an event at the city's minster featuring former hostage Terry Waite.

    The former envoy of the Archbishop of Canterbury spent five years in captivity after he was seized in Beirut while trying to negotiate the release of British journalist John McCarthy and other hostages.

    He is on the line-up for the ninth Festival of Ideas, which runs until 16 June, with BBC Radio 4's Today programme being broadcast from the University of York this morning.

    Police bugged the home of a mother and her partner after her three-year-old son died from internal injuries, a court has heard.

    Riley Siswick was found dead two days after he was home alone with Kyle Campbell in Huddersfield in 2016, Leeds Crown Court was told.

    The following year, hidden equipment was used to monitor the content of arguments between Mr Campbell and Riley's mother Kayleigh Siswick.

    Mr Campbell, 27, denies murder.

    Ms Siswick, who is also 27 and has since separated from Mr Campbell, denies causing or allowing the death of a child.

    A foster scheme in Yorkshire is to benefit from £500,000 of government funding to help find carers for child refugees arriving in the UK.

    Migration Yorkshire successfully applied for the cash from the Home Office to initiate 240 new foster placements in the region.

    The organisation works with unaccompanied children who are seeking asylum.

    It said it had seen the number of youngsters being cared for in the region double from 130 in 2016 to 260 in 2018.

    In addition to the 240 foster placements, the group also hopes to use the money to cover 150 supported-living placements and provide training for 500 social workers.

    A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in a North Yorkshire village.

    The man, who was in his 40s and from the Stockton-on-Tees area, died at the scene on Friday night on Acres Lane in Harome, near Helmsley.

    Police received a call at about 23:05 and on arrival arrested the driver of a red Ford Focus, a 21-year-old man from Barnsley, who has since been released under investigation.

    North Yorkshire Police say they want to hear from any witnesses.

    They say they are particularly wanting to trace the driver of a dark coloured Range Rover which was travelling on the road at the time and who may have information about what happened.

    The force's roads policing unit shared a picture on Twitter of the bike at the side of the A647 Leeds Ring Road near Bramley.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council says it has invested in "refreshing" the fleet of four land trains which run one two routes, one on the North Promenade and the other on the South Promenade.

    A new loco with three newly-liveried carriages to match has been purchased, while another of the trains has been completely resprayed.

    Hull's ice rink is to close next month while essential work is carried out.

    Hot water boilers will be upgraded during the work at Hull Ice Arena, which will be closed from 8 to 27 July.

    The venue's water cylinder will also be replaced to provide a higher volume of water to the arena, while the rink will also receive a re-coating and be re-marked for ice hockey games.

    Hull City Council said it would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time.

    The partner of Jansin Turgut has thanked Hull FC supporters for helping to raise funds after the rugby league player was severely injured in a fall from a car park in Ibiza.

    The 23-year-old played for Hull FC and Salford, who terminated his contract last month.

    When the clubs play each other on Friday, Steph Gaunt will be a special guest, delivering the match ball to the pitch.

    In a statement, she said: "The funding raised by everyone that has donated has been such a weight lifted off our shoulders.

    "After the air ambulance, the surgery and all of the rehabilitation that Jansin needs to go through is going to cost a lot of money, so every donation is such a huge help for us."

    The second-rower fell from the third floor of a car park on 19 May and has been in intensive care ever since, with plans to fly him home in an air ambulance in the near future.

    The number of overseas visitors coming to Yorkshire went up by 4% last year - a new record according to the latest government figures.

    Almost 1.4m people came here from abroad, many of them for big events like the Tour de Yorkshire and World Triathlon Series, which returns this weekend.

    Compared to 2017, that's an increase of 50,000 people.

    Last year, overseas visitors spent more than £600m in Yorkshire, also a new record.
