    An East Yorkshire Army veteran has been presented with an award from the Prime Minister after he set up a worldwide network of breakfast clubs to bring together thousands of military personnel past and present.

    Dereck Hardman set up the first Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club in Hull in 2007 and since then the idea has grown, with more than 300 clubs around the world.

    At the weekend, Mr Hardman, from Ganstead, was presented with a Points of Light award in recognition of his efforts.

    Conservative MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, who presented him with the award, said: "Dereck’s hard work and dedication has shown that a great idea from the East Riding can grow into something big, helping tens of thousands of veterans across the world.”

    This was the scene a few minutes ago after a crash between a lorry and a bus on the M62.

    It's westbound near junction 27 for Gildersome and junction 26 for Chain Bar.

    The lorry, which is sat in the middle of the carriageway, will need specialist recovery to get it moved.

    Highways England says it's looking at getting one lane open shortly to ease congestion.

    Video game companies are in Hull today to headhunt potential employees.

    They're looking at the work of students studying game design to try and cherry pick the best new talent.

    Simon Grey, from the University of Hull, says the games industry is worth £4bn to the UK economy and employs about 47,000 people.

    He said: "There's a huge skills shortage in the UK because the industry is growing at a huge rate and they haven't got enough skilled graduates to fill all the jobs that they want."

    CCTV images have been released of a man police would like to speak to after a car was driven into a shop and money and alcohol was stolen in a West Yorkshire village.

    At about 01:30 on 2 May, a black BMW X5 was driven into the Co-op store on Westfield Lane in Scholes, near Cleckheaton.

    A group of men wearing hoodies and gloves were then seen to steal the tills and alcohol.

    Anyone who recognises the people in the photos is asked to get in touch with police.

    A homeless centre which was forced to shut after a break-in over the weekend is able to open again after Hull boxer Tommy Coyle stepped in to help.

    The Raise The Roof project wrote on Twitter that its community hub was closed today after being burgled over the weekend, with damage caused and donations and petty cash stolen.

    The organisation said it was "absolutely devastated" and it was not sure when the hub, which gives out free breakfasts and hot drinks to rough sleepers, would be able to open again.

    But just hours later, Coyle messaged to say he'd "just got back to Hull" after fighting at Madison Square Garden in New York and he wanted to help.

    He visited Raise The Roof this morning, replacing the stolen cash and arranging to have the broken door fixed meaning the centre will now be open again tomorrow.

    On Saturday, Coyle lost to Chris Algieri in a fight for the WBO international super-lightweight title on the undercard for Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr.

    Last year, Raise The Roof was inundated with donations after a Hull hotel cancelled the Christmas booking it had made for a group of homeless people.

    Up to 15 historic narrow boats have been left stranded in a canal lock in Rochdale

    The boats were being sailed back from a meeting of The Historic Narrow Boat Club in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

    But they became stranded at lock 49 on the Rochdale Canal due to a fault.

    The boats are up to 165 years old.

    Police officers are targeting serious and violent crime as they launch a new unit in South Yorkshire.

    It's been funded partly through a £2.5m grant from the Home Office and aims to cut gun and knife crime over the next 12 months.

    Police say they are growing "increasingly concerned" about a missing 15-year-old girl from Shipley.

    Leah Barber (pictured), was last seen at her home address yesterday evening.

    She is described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall, with shoulder-length dark brown hair.

    Officers say she is believed to be wearing blue or grey jeans and a grey coloured jacket.

    The West Yorkshire force says anyone with information about Leah's whereabouts should get in touch.

    The programme for this year's extended Freedom Festival in Hull has been revealed.

    Circus acts, street theatre, music performances and more will all feature at the festival in August, which is due to take place over five days for the very first time.

    About 130,000 visitors attended the event last year, which saw giant puppets paraded through the city.

    A 17-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital with suspected back and hip injuries after falling down a river embankment.

    North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said it was called to Station Road, in Richmond, at about 20:00 on Sunday after reports the boy had "climbed over some railings and fallen down a sheer embankment and landed on the river bank".

    Firefighters worked with Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team and ambulance staff to get the teenager on to a stretcher and back across the river at about 20:00 last night.

    A teenage boy has been found guilty of the murder of another teenager, who was stabbed to death outside a party in Calderdale last October.

    Jamie Brown, 17, died from a single wound after being attacked in Ovenden, Halifax, on 27 October.

    A jury of seven men and five women sitting at Leeds Crown Court also found the teenager, who is 17, guilty of violent disorder and wounding with intent.

    Two other teenagers aged 15 and 17 were found guilty of violent disorder.

    Judge Geoffrey Marson QC adjourned the case until 12 July for sentencing.

    None of those found guilty can be named due to their age.

    A helicopter searching for eight climbers who went missing in the Indian Himalayas - including a lecturer from the University of York - has spotted five bodies, a military source says.

    Four Britons, including Dr Richard Payne (pictured), two Americans, an Australian and an Indian made up the missing group who disappeared on India's second highest-peak.

    "They were on the same route as the climbers had taken," a source told AFP, referring to the bodies seen.

    The Nanda Devi mountain was believed to have been hit by multiple avalanches.

    In a statement, The University of York confirmed Dr Payne had been reported missing after travelling to the Himalayas on a climbing trip.

    "We are extremely concerned for his safety," it said.

    Dr Payne, a lecturer in environmental geography, joined the university in 2015 after working at academic institutions in seven countries.

  17. North Yorkshire power cuts: Hundreds of houses affectedpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 3 June 2019

    Hundreds of properties in part of North Yorkshire have been affected by power cuts.

    Unplanned power cuts have affected the YO18 and YO62 postcodes as well as the DL11 and DL9 postcodes, according to Northern Powergrid.

    About 270 premises in the area around the North York Moors have been affected, with power expected to be restored by about 15:00.

    While fewer than 10 properties are said to be affected in the Richmondshire area, police have issued the following warning:

    A 14-year-old boy who was reported missing earlier has been found, police say.

    Krystian Pawlowski had been missing from Wakefield since last Friday.

    But the teenager has now been found "safe and well", according to police.

    An 81-year-old man has been pulled to safety after an arson attack at his property.

    The fire started outside his maisonette on Kettlewell Road at about 01:40 on Sunday morning, damaging the entrance and stairwell.

    An 81-year-old man was taken to hospital after being pulled out of the building by fire crews.

    It's believed the fire was deliberate, starting near the bins of the maisonettes.
